Actually it is not an epic fail.
To me its the best uberCMS Staff page I seen and that looks good. It was his first time also so he just gave it a shot and it came out great.

It's not that hard actually, just look around in the source code and see what different things do, where things are selected in which part of the code your in and so fourth, better yet, the database table names and field names are even self explanatory themselves.
