It's not. It functions like any other emulator, it's just written in Java, and in it's own format. The emulation scene for runescape isn't as professional as, say WoW. Our emulators are stone age compared to what they should be. there is one professional server, and only 5%(if that) of the community know how to use it properly(it's called Hyperion if you wanna taste it).

There are some, like myself, who are trying to develop a professional server, but it's slow due to life and lack of knowledge(I'm learning a lot to put forth into my project). But hey, who knows when the next big thing will come out

Other mmos everyone is collecting packets and old versions are useless since you cant sniff packets etc. But in runescape "developers" are just doing random crap and adding new functionality on clients which havent been officially used in like 4 years.

BTW, hyperion seems kind of bad for a "proffesional attempt". In the mmo i play now (Silkroad Online) there is no working server emulators, and the one project in java uses Mina, has seperate login server to game server (well all server emus with Silkroad Online do) and it was criticised by people for how that wouldnt work well with a large amount of players...

You don't have to separate the login server from the game server in RuneScape, primarily because you won't ever see more than one server of the same version running on a server. And if it did, the servers are very different, so they would use a different player pool for each server, making a login server a useless waste of time. Plus if you have different versions, you'll have to add extra code server-side to manage different versions and direct em properly. And you can packet sniff any runescape client, no matter what the version. once the client is logged in, the client fully functions, even if the server code doesn't compliment it

All mmo's differ... how can anyone answer this dimwitted question? It's not like all mmo's use the same source.

No i meant why can rs developers add random stuff quite easily and how can people work on really old clients. You should have read the other posts first.
