for GM characters edit your database "Accounts" table. Set the field named "accesslevel" to 300 for any account that you want to be a GM

as for your disconnects/crashes. It is because your server side files do not match the STBs in your client.
There are loads of posts on this subject or closely related ones. It is probably the most common problem that anyone ever gets.
