No, ROSE got (or had) talented coders, some way better than the average guys in real companies (take a look at riot).
But we definitively got 0 designers hence why everyone is stealing from official servers. And talking about greeding, designers are always money whores!

Rose coders were very talented, but you can hardly compare their situation to ours... these days we have engines, some of which are free, and most of which could better be called "game development suites", because they provide you with everything you need to pull a game out of your ass... and designers? anyone can become one... I started out as a 3D artist, and I learned to code.. So of course someone who started out coding could learn to do 3D art, no? Hell, the two go very well together, you don't have to worry about that damn artist < -- > programmer pipeline anymore... xD

I too, have files I'm not sharing, but I rather keep my promise to this guy that gave me that stuff than share it with a community that can only flame.
I'll be releasing some stuff soon if some guys give me their consent for it, let's see what happens then.
I know man, same for me...I got some old stuff like the Exjam drop editor he made for titan rose pre-evo and such things somewhere on a USB stick...Yet i can't release it since i swore the the guy who gave me them that i would not share them (which is kind of a paradox for an osirose dev ahah ).

But in all seriousness, it takes only a year or two to make a fresh new game these days, with plenty of low cost and free engines to work with. The rose community has been idling and begging for a solid eight or more years, not counting the pre-osrose days
Actually i think pre-osrose/Arcturus rose dev community was way more active...
I mean there was Johny bravo's emulator, Brett19 e-Rose, dRose, hRose, auRose,Titan Rose, sRose, Vampyrios...
Even if most of them were asses just look at the numbers ! 8 different rose dev communities (and probably more i can't remember...) ! Holy shit...
Nowadays we don't even have one (well we have purple that's pretty much it )

For sure, all the big brains (Brett, Exjam...) went away on arcturus as soon as ruff launched. The others were pissed-of since no one start to care about their community.

    Purple,

Congrats on getting the client running! Are you going to use that Client as a base and try and fix everything?

What money? The point of me wanting to release it was so that ICON and Co. couldn't make any more money from selling the source. I've never sold any kind of source code or tool for ROSE.

I "delayed" it because my hard drive which contained my original IROSE + Evo SVN dumps died (and spent several days trying to clone and recover files, much fun). I "delayed" it because I wanted to upgrade it to VS2012 to release it in a working out-of-the-box state. I "delayed" it because unlike 95% of this "development" community, I haven't sat behind my PC twiddling my thumbs waiting on someone to release something.

If you want to call me out specifically about "delaying" it then you are more than welcome to, but you must not forgot that I actually have a server which I and my team are actively developing for. I said (back in January I think) that I will absolutely not stop devoting my time to my server to release something for people who don't know the difference of a header to a library. Our ROSE server is 7 years old in 3 weeks - who would've guessed. What have you done in 7 years?

These past few pages have turned into a drama mosh pit it seems - of which I have no interest in partaking so I'll be going back to my viewer hole. Both Purple and Hyrius1 have gotten the Client working so you have no excuse to be sitting around waiting on others.

    Have a good day!

    Thanks.
I don't have any real intent to try running a server with any of this but I am putting in some time to see what it will take to make rose into something that it's never been before. Dynamic spawns that move around the map, WASD movement with active dodging, Overhauling item structures and various other interesting projects. Loads of changes to packet structures, and above all else taking pretty much all calculations out of the client so that the server handles it all.

I will be quietly working away at this for some time I expect and while I'm not specifically trying to keep my progress to myself, I will not be making loads of releases all the time. My project probably won't be of much interest to rose purists. If anyone is interested though I don't mind sharing what I've done.

Up to now I've been working through all the file structure loading and setting it up so that it will preferentially load all the (extracted) VFS files from the 3DDATA folder rather than from VFS. Came up against some really weird issues like the LUA failing to load properly if even one normal (non-VFS) file was loaded first. Some very strange ways to handle file loading going on in here lol.
That was really just a side issue though. I was testing some concepts that involve lots of small changes to STBs and found that unlike pre-evo, it only loads from VFS so..... had to spend a frickin week modifying all that stuff before moving on with my actual plan.

That's deving for you. 1 step forward and about 18,000 steps sideways. Always end up diving into some deep dark alleyway in the code.

Well thats the end of that, pretty sure no one has even tried compiling the code even with Purple's explanation of how to do it to get it partially working.

ROSE could be so much more! lol my nostalgia for this game is amazing, but my actual dedication of doing something is 0 lol. I'd just have fun messing with the whole game don't care if anyone would even consider playing it.

And that, in a nutshell, is the entire problem with the fragmented ROSE PServer community.
Nobody has the dedication to actually do anything with all the tools they have been given.

I'm the same as everyone else except that I know for a fact that I could make something of it if I had the drive.
It's really not that hard. Just takes some dedication and a lot of time, neither of which I seem to have in great abundance.
A few weeks back it just seemed to me to be a challenge to get it running so I dedicated about 3 days of solid work to it and low and behold... It worked.
now it just feels like a grind to continue with it. I'm going to do it but I won't be putting my life on hold if you get what I mean.
Maybe if more people were actually interested in doing something with this rather than just sponging then I wouldn't feel like the only person keeping osrose alive, let alone working on what could be a whole new game..........
    It's kind of depressing

In my honest opinion, just use these sources as reference, use something like ExJam's client to make something good out of it.

Viewer could not release the source in its current state? I think there are good programmers interested in leave the usable source.

That's what I was going to do - I was cleaning up the source folder (just removing unused/unneeded crap of which there is/was a lot) so I could give it to Purple to look at. But the HDD which had it is dying so I had to unplug it from my PC - I need to find a quick way to image the HDD or copy the folder from it - so if anyone has any suggestions then fire away, otherwise I don't have it anymore. I never made a backup of it for some reason despite backing up everything else.

I'm going to buy one of those external SATA HDD enclosures so I can at least try to recover it without having to take my PC apart.

As it stands, the only sources I have is the current live AO source and my original Evo SVN dump (which AO is built upon - so not the rubbish released).

Re: Should i Release RoseOnline Official Source Code ?

    Hope you can recover it.
A decent working copy would be very helpful to help me get started with working this thing over completely.

    Either way thanks for trying

I'm learning a whole lot of interesting things about this source. It appears that ROSE was meant to be far more than it ended up being. It has code for NPC and Monster collision detection using DirectX and all kinds of other fun stuff.
I'm still just scratching the surface now though.
