DDOS Attacks on the Private server community

I have been noticing alot of complaints from maplestory servers saying DDOS attack almost every time.

From my understanding of a ddos attack it takes a good amount of knowledge to administer an attack..

What my discussion is who has the time to DDOS Private servers?
Why could they be doing it..

to the best of your abilities are there ways by which you can proactively prevent a DDOS attack. this is for my learning. Because i am coming outta college with a Network Administrator degree and i dont even know how to go by prevent these attack

You're getting a degree but you don't know how easy it is to DDoS? Also, most of the attacks on servers aren't DDoS, they're mostly DoS.

Also, time to ddos servers? It's MapleStory. Most people here who starts a server for reasons other than generating revenue have a LOT of times on their hands.

i get dos/ddos-ed daily on my server. I'm not gonna lie, one time a week i could care less but it's getting on my nerves now. Every night the server goes down for like 6 hours. I don't know if it's more than one guy but this guy who pretends to be doing it on msn told me he's doing it for the lulz.

I find this really lame. DDoS'ing others is just stupid. I don't care if someone hacks, but don't ruin it for others.

(With hacking I meant like hacking on Maple, but dc hacking is lame.)

Lol my dedi has been down for 42hrs already from the attacks worldstream nulled my ip and said they won't restore it untill the attacks are clear... Same thing I belive with the guys above me on gtop Extalia. It's just pathetic how people ddos just to gain players into there servers..

I was just waiting for a thread like this..
I just recently opened up my server and now i'm getting DDos attacks every single day, more then once per day too. I'm pretty sure it's the same person but i'm not quite sure. It's really irritating because they won't stop as if they are achieving something and i'm sitting here trying to fix it..

I've delt with this kind of stuff many times.
And to be honest, you can prevent ddos attacks from the stupid people.

To prevent the most noticeable ddos attacks, try making the following adjustments:

• -Have your website hosted on a different webserver, other then the server hosting your pserver.
• -Use cloudflare, and mask that IP with a layer of protection using their proxy system.
• -Change all subdomains in your dns to less obvious names that can't be found. (And yes, this includes ftp.yourdomain.com) remove that, and rename it! Another biggy is direct.yourdomain.com
• -Have your server's client not use a direct IP under any circumstance. Use a domain type link, such as from back in the day yourname.zapto.org. (That way if the attacker starts attacking, you can change your ip in the future if you move to another backup server of yours).
• -Are you making enough cash from donations? Dont be greedy, try saving enough to spend on buying a backup server, in which you can move to temporarily during the ddos attacks.
• -Using skype? Stop giving out your skype username to everyone, people can get your IP using that WITHOUT EVEN ADDING YOU.
• -Are you so dumb, that everyone hates you because you flame 24/7. Learn to stfu, so that way people don't want to target you and your players. They are ddos'ing you for a reason.

Note: If the person ddos'ing you is smart enough, he will always find a way to get your IP.
In this case, the only way to fix a ddos attack is thru hardware level protection with mitigation and null routing.

How will this help? The Attacker can either attack both IPs, or either one he chooses.

You sound quite stupid saying this. The method CF uses to mask an IP, and even resolve ongoing ddos attacks is outrageous and very easily resolved. CF is not the way to go cdn wise if you are under attack.

This may do little help, but do you have enough IPs? Do you want to keep changing the connection?

This would mean giving out new clients every time you do this. If you have more than 1 server, you should load balance to help mitigate the packets received.

How does skype have anything to do with Maplestory servers. Oh and on a side note, you can input proxy settings in Skype so your IP can not be resolved.

A dumbass could find someones IP. Regarding maple, your website can be pinged, and your server's client releases your IP when you look at where you are connecting.

Also, IMO hardware is not even needed. Sure it is completely recommended, but if you have 2-3 servers, load balancing, a few scripts to drop all packets that get flagged (write your own rules), and block any traffic via ports that aren't necessary for the game you should be just fine. That would mitigate 90% of the attack as long as you know what you are doing.

Now overall your post was a load of bullshit, you have no knowledge in what you are talking about. You recommended the dumbest ideas that will help no one. The end.
