[Discussion] Maplestory going 3D?

Before anything is said, this is purely speculation.


Is MapleStory planning to go 3D and/or release a 3D version of MapleStory? I think so. Everyone knows Nexon is known for releasing subtle hints about what they plan on doing way before they confirm it. They've done so with KoC, Aran, Evan and DB. I have two main reasons for believing they could possibly be planning something 3D in the future.

First reason is the videos on the top of their website found here. If you have ever viewed their site in the past, there were a few videos with 1-2 second segments of characters in 3D. Lately, they seem to be adding more and more segments of a 3 dimensional MapleStory. I find it strange, especially when put together with my second reason.

The next reason is due to the most recent event they are holding. It can be found here. If you are too lazy to view the page, it's basically an event asking players to go to a website and construct a 3D "scene". It could be anything, from monsters to towns, to a fighting scene. I know this could also be viewed as a promotion for PaperCraft Museum but I can't help but find it odd they would do something like this when they start showing more and more 3D videos.

I'm not sure if they already stated they had plans to or if they already denied such plans, as I don't keep up with every little thing that happens with them. This is just something I have personally noticed and was wondering what you guys think about it. Think it'll happen? Think it'll be any good? Personally, if they did and the game looked like the segments in the videos, I think it would be shit. It reminds me too much of that Pokemon game for N64, graphics wise. Then again... the age group of players fits that genre well I assume. Anyways... your opinion?

Sorry but those reasons seem ridiculous to me. Those 3D avatars have always been there since the old MapleStory website in the media section, even back in 2006. The video is just a mix of their old little 3D video mixed with some graphics. It's not anything new. Also, the event, I bet it's sponsored (meaning they paid Nexon to advertise them some lame way) by PaperCraft Museum, where they link to as the first step. Also, I'm sure you already know that a huge thing about MapleStory and what people like about it is the 2D part. Otherwise, they'd be playing some other game and MapleStory wouldn't be as big. After all, we all saw the users' comments on the stupid Japanese MapleStory-look alike 3D thing. Nearly everyone hated it, so I'm sure Nexon is smart enough not to entirely end their own business.

@above: I'm sure if MapleStory was to go 3D, private servers wouldn't even bother to update to 3D considering it would suck ass and pretty much ruin what's left of the game.

I honestly doubt it for the reasons stated above, along with the fact that MapleStory is thriving so much in Korea that they don't need to change the formula to success. I do think that Nexon America will be making more changes to appeal to the American gamer, but not a engine and graphic overhaul of the game.

There actually is a different kind of maplestory coming out, Although it's called Maplestory2 (Not MSEA's Episode 2, This is not much 3D, although it contain some. It's very similar to DFO, (Such as Moving up and down, along with left and right)

Well, again as I stated, it's purely speculation. I just find it odd how the videos are surfacing more now, especially when they promote this event. I can fully agree people like MapleStory because it's basically the best put together 2D game. I've tried Wonderking and one other game (forgetting the name, it's been awhile) and neither seemed that great. Sure they were good in their own way but didn't quite have that "play for awhile" appeal to it. I'm more curious to see if they'll make another game that branches off of MapleStory, in a 3D version. So long as it doesn't have those graphics though... they seem really gay imo.

In reference to GMS copies KMS, they kinda have to. Nexon America is owned by Nexon in Korea, so if Nexon in Korea tells them to add something, they add it.
