My Favorite pirate was gunslinger, but thats just me.
Private devs > public ones.. the devs with potential will not release (if they are somewhat realistic and value their work) to those who deny grabbing a tutorial/book to learn what many had to learn before they were able to even code anything but they just think devs were always "elite"...
And don't tell me releasing tutorials is so much of a good idea, the only good tutorial i've seen was Moogra's. Nobody is rewriting a whole java book into RZ-language so everyone can understand.

Being realistic and valuing your work has hardly anything to do with releasing things, neither does having potential. Releasing your work is a choice. If you do not want people to take credit for your shit (which undoubtably will happen), don't release it. If you chose not to, however, you will miss out on all the positive effects that releasing brings. First, you'll at least get some credit. And secondly, people will improve on your work.
I'm not denying that chronic leechers are problematic. Your statement of private devs > public ones, however, is untrue. Unless you're refering to the current situation, in which, most decent devs have gone private, it is generalised.

Actually it has alot to do with it, isn't the problem we are talking about that people don't release good stuff anymore so the MapleStory section "is dead"? Most devs nowadays don't feel any need to release much because most of the community isn't willing to learn but leech.
That way, they are realistic about their work because they had to do something to finish it and who would share that with somebody who just waits for it to be spoonfed into their mouth. Ofcourse it's still a choice and some will make the choice... but many more decide not to lately. It's just normal.
The devs will feel more stimulated to share their work with a small group of elites than with the whole world because the small elite can do something with it. So quality wise, I still claim private devs accomplish more than public developments. Quantity wise, ofcourse, the public developments have more affect but that basically comes down to having 200 servers which crash every hour. :)

The only reason private devs accomplish more is because when something good actually gets made, it's kept private. Therefore; i'm all for sharing latest accomplishments. Though, against the spoonfeeding for dummies you talk about. Limit noob-guides and such. Yea, that's my opinion.
So you say keep the level of releases high? As far as I can remember the rules of this section states that every release needed a tutorial to help everyone get it to work... or to show how it works and what it does... enough said?
I honestly see where you come from and once I believed in the same since I was just waiting for those amazing releases to come which would teach me this and that but once they came you simply take them and leave them, not learn anything from it untill you're taken into the process of making the features; not the product.

Damun i didnt know this was still going ~ Bump
I don't mean to bag on some of the releases here, but I wouldn't consider a few of them releases. I mean I do that stuff on a weekly basis (or any day I code -- I don't code daily anymore). I wouldn't think of even releasing it because the fixes would be too small.
Example 5 days ago I did
-Added 100% GMS-like durability system
-Added dragon equips
-Fixed all equips that were unable to be equipped
-Changed the forging NPCs to durability
I'd say the durability system GUI would be worth releasing only if I included the full system since it had packets. Otherwise it'll just be releasing to get e-fame in my opinion. Small releases that just look cool.
The dragon equips are interesting, and I haven't seen anyone public with them yet, so that would be interesting to release. Still, that's a small packet change so I would have to think about it. Tiny releases don't really matter, even if it's a small step in the right direction. In this case, small releases don't add up. We've had thousands of releases here and not even close to a complete source.
Equips that didn't work before like item ignore pendant and stuff and 2nd/3rd pet stuff were easy but time consuming so I'd rather release the method I did it than release the code. Releasing the code will take forever.
Today I did
-Fixed potential things
-Fixed a race bug
-Added something for debugging
The last 2 I would never think of ever releasing since they're just a few lines of code each. The first one is a maybe, but I doubt I'd release due to its impracticality for most servers. The only thing good it does is sort out damage hackers.
In the past, I've made a number of NPC changes to be GMS-like. Yeah GMS like stuff is good, but I wouldn't release it. It's not because I want to keep it private or anything as it's stupid work. I wouldn't release it because it's a waste of my time for releasing, and your time for reading and using it.
this thread went from v.55 discussion to private development and releases..? wat
It's because back in v55 development and releases were high, while now they are not. That's how we got to that subject, i believe.
@deagan You're right. My idea is not possible. People will always post noob guides. And what you said about accidental leeching is true as well. I still believe the scenario i suggested is close to perfect. Though, the way of getting to that point is debatable to say the least. Or just generally impossible..
there isnt much to it anymore, hopefully one day soon someone will make another v55 server ;)
I used to love v55. Everything was just.. just PERFECT.
I used to have soo much fun back the. The MapleStory now is just some useless shit.
It was so fun back then!

I think they still do. My cousin and my best friend made a v55 private server just a few hours ago.
nah i think latest versions are getting better and better, and a latest version server gets the least competition.
