Post [Guide] FreeDNS setup with pictures. (solution to IPs or bad subdomains)

Since I haven't done much for this forum in a while, I figured I'd make a guide for giving a (sub)domain to an IP for those who want to host their game's web server on their own PC. I'm aware that theres been a No-IP guide, but after getting several emails that my no-ip subdomains expired a bit after registering them, I've started to dislike it. And I assume I'm not the only one that needs images in their tutorials to learn. ;D

    Intro

FreeDNS is almost like No-Ip, only your domain does not expire AND it's easier to set up. Plus they provide many different domains to use.

If you run your web server on your computer, you probably wouldn't want to link people to your site using an IP number, so using FreeDNS or No-Ip would give you a subdomain (like somegame.to.org) FOR your server.

In this case we'll be using FreeDNS, since as I said it gives you a wide variety of domains, and I just find it less of a pain.

    Step One

Make sure you register here. Don't worry, signing up is really quick.

    Step Two

On the front page, a bit down, find the link that says "
    other domains besides afraid.org".

    Step Three

Next you will see a list of domains. You can choose from ANY of these that don't say "private". You can even search for a domain you want. Click on the domain name of your choice to go on to the next step.

    Step Four

Next you will see a box like this:

Example: if you put totoman127 in the subdomain box, and choose mooo.com, you would get the address "http://totoman127.mooo.com/". Make sure if you're using hamachi, put your HAMACHI ip in the "destination" box.

*If you have a host already that gave you a free subdomain, and you wanted to change it, change the top box from "A" to "CNAME", and instead of an IP, put your current sites address. Then on the next screen, make sure to check "cloak".*

    Step Five

If you have done everything correctly, you should see another box that displays your new adress, and the ip (or previous adress) that it points to.

Now you can just put your short (hopefully easy to remember) address into your browser, and access your site!

Note that if your web server is running on port 8080, you will have to link people to your site with :8080 after the domain you chose, such as http://somegame.to.org:8080/.

Hope this guide helped. Let me know of anything that should be cleared up, fixed, or explained.

    Yeah, freedns is really nice to have when you get a host that gives you some long subdomain. Or even a www.host.com/you domain. I hate those so much D;

That means it's all working correctly. :B You have to go abyss' htdocs and replace the index.html with your websites.
