Agreed, firewalls are to discipline traffic, allowing or not allowing traffic/data based on a ruleset, but it will not be able to 'mitigate' (intelligently check what is good or bad and let the legit users pass without causing extra issues to them), of course you can still merely drop some unwanted data out of the server, but still, this is the maximum you would be able to do and it wouldn't be really enough to be safe.
