no im quite serious like i asid im running off a bunch of older work computers i got for free all of them were origionally setup ad workstations not servers and not all were same model the only full form box i had was also the oldest so i did not have any larger ram for it but unlike my other boxes i was able to add 4 hard drives and external usb drives as my media server the internals atr a main 500 gb a 300 gb and 2 20 gb drives it also has the option to add in my dual network cards from a server currently if i turn them on about 8 eithernet ports if i want to run it as a network host also but my router does fine
i didnt know about the 1:1 thing its never failed me to max out the swaps and spread them out on multiple drives do you think having swaps across multi drives may change that ratio? each drive has a split partition up front dedicated for swap file but mybe i should change that to match the ram for each seperate drive i guess?
Ive always ran apps and alot of items at once that when i let windows manage swap its never enough it always autoconfigs me to recomended 3gb (aprox) swap and still asks to boost it on me when i get to much going so i just max naturally to 4096 on each so it stops pestering me

Think of it like a car that has no rev limiter (granted I know almost all now-a-days do =\) sure you could rev the engine up / run it at 10,000 RPMs, but do you think that's really good for the engine when it redlines at 8k RPMs -- NO... Well think of it as the same way for swap. There is no real applicable situation where you would want to run more than 1:1

gpu --> Nvidia FX5200 128mb 128bit
hdd --> 160gb

I made sure that I was logged in as root when I copied all the files and when I started the whole process. I am still logged on as root as of this moment. I didn't think of trying the chmod 755 -RV /PWServer, but I did chmod the start.sh file.
I just did the chmod to the PWServer directory and still I get the message Access Denied when I run start.sh

Use 7-zip or Winrar to extract the *.iso from the archive and mount it in vmware. Or burn the *.iso to disc if you aren't using a virtual machine.
I will try again by reinstalling linux and the server and not using the gui at all. Cross your fingers while I cross my eyes. :)

When you upload your files (via winscp I think your using) did you set the upload permission to 775?Quote:

so i figured i would just manually place them in vbox using winscp but vbox is refusing the connection any idea how to fix these two problems? i know this probably aint the place to ask this but i figured it related since im using 343's release o.o
P.S: also when opening ports i know you have to open 29000 8080 and 80 but open them TCP or UDP or both?

try to install openssh-server or any other ssh server - if installed look at open port ...

ok I think that I am almost there. I installed ubuntu 11.10 server and copied all the files from the server install disks, configured all the files and was able to start the server with the ./start.sh with no problems. The only issue I have now is that when I run ifconfig, it tells me that my inet addr is :10.0.2.15. I went through and changed all the ip addresses to that and restarted the linux box and the ./start.sh upon restart.

Tried with no success. Still unable to get to the registration page when I type in my wan ip address. In the video, it shows 343 typing in just the ip address of the vmware station server that he is running on which was 10.0.0.51 and it was able to access the page just fine. However, when I try to do the same from my win7 browser on the same machine that is running the vbox, I get that I could not connect to the ip address. Please help. I can feel I am so close and probably just missing something small.

Can't find means it's not there xD. Verify the path where your script is calling the script.
You can verify the flags by typing ls -al inside the directory where the scripts are:

I have no experience with VBOXs or VMWAREs. Did you try mounting it inside the box (copy the iso inside the virtualized environment) and mount locally?

Hey initial setup went ok other than a hickup connecting vm to lan and external but bupassed with hamachi gateway mode got the server up i believe got to admin page and booted server...

actually can you pop a spot up in post 1 or 2 with a list of all log file locations and all config file locations that we would need if we are having issues and to modify any settings that are needed between diff computers? even if in a spoiler box that way we can always know where to look for when we mess up lol

ok up and running slow cause my server box it actually has 3x 256 mb sticks of pc 100 i thought it had more but i was wrong most i was allowed to allocate to Virtual box was 380 mb ram How sad but it ran with just base world loaded combat was extremly slow to initiate but thats all my end and i will try to find an alternate machine for the server

OK, so here is the new problem, I am unable to download the client, or rather part 6 of either the 'un-packed' variety or the first set of the 'parts'. Anyone have access to the whole client, in 1 file that they would be willing to make a torrent of please. I am so close, but can't really appreciate the server being up, without a client to utilize it. Thanks again for all of your help.
BTW the error that I keep getting is that the file is broken, everytime I download it and have even tried on a seperate computer to get the files.

the majority of those tools are for use in Windows. Don't try to edit the files on your live server. Make edits remotely, test on a virtual box, then when you're sure it's all working, take the server down and update the appropriate files. In some cases you may need to send out a patch.Quote:

2) Do they need to be put in a certain spot on the computer?
I installed VMware Player and ubuntu and followed the first part of this guide (using the guide & the video).
I got to this part "-- Mount server ISO (or physical disc), and copy all to system root" and when I typed in "mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom" it took a few seconds and then said "mount: /dev/sr0: unknown device"
Did I do somthing wrong? Am I missing any files? Any help would be much appreciated. I would really like to learn this.
Hey 343 im having a little bit of a problem with CPW i have unpacked every .pck in my client folder took the .pcks out and put in the "filename.pck.files" into my client and when using winscp to transfer files from desktop to /opt/cpw/files/new on server i get an error saying
building/models/d/q36???.mox Doesn't exist
System Error. Code: 123.
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect
any suggestion or do you know what im doing wrong? (btw im trying to set up auto patching in CPW)

Is the client limiting venomancer male, barbarian female, both m/f Assassin's and both m/f Phycics ? or is it something i can change in server to open these up atleast male venomancers and female barbarians.

With the template you can change the hex of your character to these however you client will crash when you try and play them. This is because the client cant load the models for them as they don't exist in the client. You might be able to get them load if you give them a model but I haven't tested anything further yet.

i have a question is there much difference between running this in a VMware to running it on an actual server dedicated for just running the game on?
something like 16GB RAM, 3.33GHz processor speed quad core processor
on a low end box 2.8ghz i noticed a huge diff from running through vm and dedicated the vm one had 760ish mb ram and ran so horrid it was unberable the dedicated one only has 512 mb ram and runs just fine..Quote:

are you talking about your server rates? cause you can do that via if have winscp you can connect it to your VM or Vbox useing ifconfig in the vbox to get its IP also make sure to have openssh-server installed on your OS in vbox (apt-get install openssh-server) or winscp wont connect open up winscp in the host name type in your vboxs ip then your login and pass you use to sign into root in vbox after that a box will come up asking something just click yes then enter your password again and a box should come up files on the right and left right is your main comp and left is your VM/Vbox find your root/pwserver/gamed/ptemplet in this text document is your server rates exp bonus drop bonus money bonus and sp bonus hope this answers your question ^^Quote:

yeah i saw it was 0 bonus xp witch is why i wanted to lower base xp
i want to just make it so leveling was slower was all

these i think the first field might be level diference so up to -11 lvls below you then xp gained from that mob 15 % bonus to its base 0 skill 0 cash 0 drop changes from base
and as it goes up it looks like the rates increase based on the first colum ? so if i adjust these it appears to be the rates from lvl differencs ...
I just played with these a litle and im not 100% sure ill test later but i believe i did manage to drop overall xp gain ...

I followed the vid to setup found all the points you had shown to change your old IP 10.0.0.51 to my IP 192.168.1.97
I also modified every instance of 10.0.0.51 to my ip in the client dir using find all containing
The only thing is seeing isnt a game stopper at all just an annoyance I load the PW client it hits patcher screen to look for updates and the patch notes box is still looking for your 10.0.0.51 and i have not found where to change this on the server or client.
using a gui i tried find all containing your ip but it was to much and crashed my search lol
again it has no affect on game just wanted to change it to my own custom page for the kids or even make it redirect to account creation but i was unable to locate where its setup.
Scratch that i found it windows didnt find everything in client
E:\Games\PW_Client\patcher\skin\mainuni.xml has the offending reference all good on patcher alterations now

Ok thanks for the help before, I got it working. Up until now I am stuck. I continued to follow the video and your guide. my server's ip was the same as the one u had in the video there, and when I tried to navigate to it on my web browser it didn't work. When I tried to navigate to the apache-tomcat part of teh vido it said that there was no such file/directory, then I tried to use the one in your guide since it was different and got a few errors. Here is the screenshot, maybe you can tell me what I'm doing wrong now.Quote:

Trying to set the bonus value on top of file to a negative cause no xp at all
dude messing with the mesmd (not supposed to mess with those) will most likely cause more problems than it will solve the only way i think your gonna get less EXP than having the rates set to zero is to go and get a ELeditor like sELedit and opens you elments.data in PW_Client>element>data click the drop bar and look for your EXP tables and mess around with that raising the number will make it take more EXP to lvl make sure to do that server side as well as client side (in linux with winscp it /root/pwserver/configs and theres an element.data in there too you have to edit both exactly that same numbers) thats the only other thing i can think of to make people on your server lvl slower also if theres anyone else playing your server you'll have to make a patch or have them download the edited elements.data and put it in there folderQuote:

EDIT:also 343 i have a question myself ive been hearing that everytime the client is updated the .pcks (i think) increase in size and that it wont go past 2GB before something happens so im wondering what happens when it does get too/past 2GB and how to decrease its size again so i can continue to update im not sure of the whole story can you fill me in on the story?o.o
