Here's the website i'm looking at:
Optical Internet Features serving Gulf Coast | Cox Business
In the "Bandwidth/speeds available..." section, which option do you think would be most suited for hosting a pwi game server from a residential location? If any that is.

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
[yes I understand that one's over {I bought a few myself :D}]
Regardless, it does appear your head is in the correct place! You will need a machine with at LEAST 16GB of ram (for my release anyway)... and bandwidth -- probably is the biggest issue. I know 'business accounts' / 'business service' is commonly offered at physical residential locations (usually much faster and or less/no monthly 'caps')...
Although another personal recommendation -- I wouldn't dive in head first and order some really fancy connection either. Especially while you're just starting up... If and when your 'player base' begins to widen, then you should of course not only be capable of upgrading, but actually do so at the necessary time...
I think I would have to say starting with a normal 'residential' account/service with no less than ~3~4 Mbit/s up-streams would be a good starting place ;)
Oh and back to the machine, you'll never need 4 TB for a PW server ;) I will have to dig it up, but, I attempted to 'conclude' the "max" physical space a single character could take up HDD wise... It's floating somewhere around the boards here, even incl. a screen shot :)

oh yea, and like Das said -- don't host (both) the game server and your client download from the same connection (ofc that's just asking for problems)...
Wow...you own dude. eBay has this stuff way cheaper @_@ I have a 6 MB downstream residential connection right now, but i have no idea on the upstream, guess I'll have to call and check. I appreciate the tip on the client hosting too, because i probably would have done just that. Really pleased that you showed me these eBay prices though, i wasn't really happy about the price of that PC since i was originally thinking around $1500. But this was really helpful guys, greatly appreciated. I think I'll do some browsing on eBay now lol
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
The thing I like about eBay is the 'buyer protection'...
So pretty much, just make sure you're buying something that's not "as is" or at least has a non DOA 'guarantee' -- then as soon as you take receipt of it test it yourself (quite easy) first check the ram with memtest86+, then run prime95 on the CPU(s), then 'scan the HDD(s)' for any bad sectors...
I only say that because I know some ppl are skeptical about 'buying used'... I have had no problems yet, and even if I did I make sure whatever I'm buying isn't listed "as is" so I'd be protected by either eBay or paypal... (Well, I have had bad experiences with non computer stuff, and have successfully gotten a refund when it was justified, so I don't see it being any different for PC stuff :D)
Oh yea, and ofc you don't know what your upstream speeds are (not your fault) most companies don't advertise it, hell many companies own customer service reps don't even know, because it's not something most people care about (or even know about)... I know it took me eons to get answers about the upstream speeds for certain packages and whether there was a monthly 'bandwidth cap' (and what that was) or not from my own company =\

For internet, you seem to live somewhere that is out in the sticks given those speeds and you referring to having Cox Internet (so you do live in the US)
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1461733879.png
is what I have and you can use Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test to find your upstream bandwidth as well. For me if I decided to run a server over my own residential connection (which I won't, and given how much an actual connection I'd be happy with like the ones I can get from AWS or Softlayer is insanely expensive) would be no more then 100-120 players (6000kbps/50), but there would probably be a bit of lag depending on what kind of router you have. ANY residential router will have trouble keeping up with that many connections (easily shown by using bittorrent, most can support a large number of NAT connections to one specific machine but it just gives up if it needs to route to any others)especially if you want to use that connection at the same time.

Yeah, that's exactly what i was thinking about while i was browsing lol Buyer protection is definitely a plus. I think i found a decent server though, but i wanted to get a second opinion before i put in a bid.
Here's the link to the server i found: 2U Server 2x Quad Core Opteron 8 core 16GB NM46X RAID | eBay
It's not quite as good as the first one i posted, i believe, but for the price, i think it's pretty decent. Do you have any thoughts on it? Something in this price range or lower would definitely take alot of stress out of the learning process lol
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
That definitely doesn't look like a bad machine... Especially not for a first one, or one to 'learn on' -- and as long as you can 'afford' the $500 bill ($540 shipped) I'd say go for it

The speedtest site says my upload speed is .42 MB/s >_> sounds pretty bad lol 50 bucks sure doesn't get ya much these days @_@ I was looking at Cox Business but i'm actually with AT&T currently.
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
MB/s or Mbit/s (huge difference) ???

I'm only paying $50 for what I get... AT&T? They always had crappy and slow DSL. I don't know about Cox but I do know that Cable is far more reliable and speedy then DSL.

... and no offense but, ouch -- you certainly need to upgrade!
I must admit I HATE comCRAP (comcast) but I do know they have some incredible packages available (at least where I am at [in Chicago]) they have up to 10 Mbit/s upstreams with 105 Mbit/s downs *drools* Now the only down side is I KNOW comCRAP has a 250GB per month 'cap' -- and you CANNOT exceed it or they DROP you! (I have had it happen to someone I know, AND I know people that work for comcrap) SO -- you would HAVE to go with a business account if you were going to exceed that (sick I know). The price for either isn't very appealing either for what it is =\

Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
Ewwwwww, and the business prices are certainly something to cringe at OMG:
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
...and that's exactly WHY those bastards impose a 250GB a month 'cap'
because they know if you DO use more than that they can DROP you and either flat out deny you service, or force you to pay ridiculously more to sign up for a "business account" -- @.@ bastards!
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
@_@ Looks like i better just look into server hosting companies >.> I ain't made of money @_@
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
http://www.speedtest.net/result/1461893799.png
Not bad considering I'm using it right now -- if I test while network is in-active I get about 24▼ & 4▲ -- payin' $50/m
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
I would suggest colocating your server. You can go for a 40USD a month (10Mbps unmetered), the lowest I've seen. I have been renting for 3 years and colocation is more practical if you are doing this for long-term.
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
I myself have comcrap and have or at least pay for 16 down 3 up, however most times it is 35 and 6. And as far as the cap and cutting off I have not experienced that as of yet. As a matter of fact last month I had used 650GB+ and had no issues others than their epic fail to fix my disconnect problems. But that is another story spanning 5 months.

Heh, I know I commonly go over 250GB per month, it's more of a "we still don't really care but need something in the TOS for people that use crazy amounts of internet". I know of only one person that ever got a notice from them for exceeding that and they downloaded a whopping 14Terrabytes that month (of what? I dont want to know)
The thing is, Comcast may not be great, but they sure as hell are a lot better then other residential ISPs
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
I pay about £35 a month for my internet connection.
This is the speed I get:

Great thing is I have unlimited downloads too so no bandwidth cap, although they do slow my connection during peak hours if I'm downloading a large amount.
Just a shame my speed to the USA isn't as good:

Really weird, I wonder if they only give a shit in the chicago area then maybe ??? Cuz here -- they sure really seem to care, you go over they will shut you off... I am not happy about any 'caps' at all -- and I initially signed up with my provider JUST because they had no cap... Well they have followed in comCRAPs footsteps and are now working on implimenting the same ridiculous 250GB per month 'cap'... Only difference is unlike comCRAP, who will shut you OFF if you go over twice, my company is planning on charging and extra -- I think it's $10 per 50GB used -- yea $10 per ea additional 50GB used (so not too bad, and a HELL of a lot better than being denied service)!!!

Only thing I can think of would be that Chicago has many more people all trying to use the internet at the same time, the Florida Treasure Coast area has a bit over half a million people while Chicago has 2.7 million people in that rather small area...
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
The genesis and tideborn territories can be captured in this release? It works fine?
Re: ¤ The Complete PW Package ¤
If you are referring to TW than yes they can or at least the few in Earthguard area that I have tried.
