yes 20 GB should be fine

ok here is how vbox works..

Virtual Box creates a Virtual Harddrive onto your windows 7 system.
has nothing to do with the partitioning of your actual harddrive what so ever.

open virtial box click new... create new harddisc to 20 or 40 gb click continue will show select a cd or whatever click add image that would be were you put the ubuntu.10.04 lts server edition onto it... then run virtual box and install it with the very basic stuff it has

this will not effect your operating systems harddrive at all.

I understand what vbox does and how it works, however I was explaining how to partition the Win7 OS drive if they did not want to use vbox but have a dual boot option.

Well been having fun pulling apart files looking at all kinda of fun things since I last checked the back here. So thought I drop in while I waited for my 1st TW test to start 4 or 5 hours away yet. So while I wait I thouhgt I would see if there where any question I could answer but everyone seems to have it under control lol :p

As to the the little dual booting option there.
Yes dual booting is an option but realy only if you have a 2nd PC and you dont want to lose the OS you have on it right now.
Other then that you couldnt run your server change the OS and test stuff out, so all in all Dual booting isnt really best option to go with.

Any I'll be about for the next few hours to try and help out with what i can, after which I have plans to start messing about with the supply stash amoung other things and will probbly lose track of the days again and not be seen for a while.

Thanks guys! Esp. to the very helpful 88supra86 and horsementech, you both helped me (and other new explorers) a lot!

For now, I'll try vbox and then some time in the future, i'll try to install ubuntu server on an external hard disk. :thumbup:

Firstly 343 I thank you for such a wonderful tutorial
and for the release a -- > 10/10
I just got my server up and running in no time
I used a seperate pc for server and client
Server PC configs are : 3 gb RAM 2.4 ghz core2Duo and 250 gb hard drive
Client is Alienware M 17x laptop
So my question is is my server's config enough to run all the maps ? without any crashes ? or should i add one more gb of RAM ?

Another Doubt is i made my server to play with friends,
My ISP has dynamic IP so it changes each time i restart my router
SO is it possible to put my Public ip for server and the website ? if yes please let me know where should i change them ? and also can we change like that again and again ? or we have to compile some stuffs ? sorry for these nuubish doubts am a non tech person just a little guidance will help :)

Also i Tried using WinSCP to connect to server pc but i was not able to do so i got an error saying "Connection refused " is there any way to make it work ?

some help will be appreciated :)

external drives i personally wouldnt recommend running a server off of, a external harddrive reads slower through usb also could be realativly unstable. if anything i would put a second harddrive into your pc and run ubuntu and the server that way

no-ip.com and register
apt-get install noip2 or apt-get install noip on ubuntu server... that will fix your dynamic ip problem.

to run full maps with a few friends your best bet would be to have 16GB to run all maps... from what i hear this server uses beastly amounts of ram.

and again with winscp...

apt-get install openssh-client
apt-get install openssh-server

username: root
password: whatever your root password is to ubuntu
address: your lan address ex. 192.168.0.50

will ask to update key... press yes

Thank you so much i got my Win Scp working and at first wasnt able to get apt-get command work .. what ever package i requested .. i got an error saying no packages found
then i found that the name server 10.0.0.31 that 343 gave was making problems so i changed the "sudo vi /etc/resolv.conf" file to my routers ip and now i could get updates

Another problem is i installed Noip and registered my domain name
here is my network config details

Router --> 10.0.0.27 ( as per 343 's guide )
PW server pc--->10.0.0.51
Client pc on lan -->10.0.0.1
default gateway for both client and server is 10.0.0.27
Internet is set as auto connect on startup
and my public ip is --->59.92.122.117(dynamic though)
and no ip domain name is -->pwtestserver.no-ip.org

when i use that public ip in browser i go to modem config page .. and I changed the client's "SERVLIST.TXT " file and added my public ip to check if it works or not .. but it didnt .. sorry if am too nuubish at these stuffs .. i just got everything else running except this
should i change my public IP in any of the server files ? please help :*:

and i did see the no ip tutorial in this forum but didnt help me much :S

After banging my head for 8 hours and getting " my router config page "
with this no ip host name on my own browser -- > http://pwtestserver.no-ip.org/register
i gave it to a friend and asked him to open
and it works just fine & i was like WTH coz i donno what went wrong i forwarded ports properly and all the guides in the tutorials .... At the moment they are downloading the client I will update as soon as i get any further problems or my success.

I followed (COPIED) 343's video AS IS. Only problem is I can't connect to "http://10.0.0.51/"... The only thing I was not able to enter during server installation was the gateway: 10.0.0.27... How/Where can we edit that? I'm using a wifi by the way. Do i have to change anything with my wifi setting or just configure the virtual box preferences?

Can't find jail. Read in another post it uses the CoA map, but not sure what it's for or even how to get to it. Any suggestions? Still waiting on easter egg hints btw.

all you have to do is edit etc/hosts and change the 10.0.0.51 to your ip and save and restart machine and everything should connect

ALSO if you give a friend your link and it works but doesnt work for you then that means your Router doesnt support loop back. or whatever its called you would have to access it by the machines IP

Man thanks a tonne and yea my router was initially with 192.168.0.xxx
but i changed everything to 10.0.0.xx as in guide so i guess i dont need to change any ips in the server files :) and still they havent logged in my server yet cozz of slow download speed of client .. i will keep you updated and thank you once more for helping everytime :D :):

i have this client as well and so does the 85+ users on my server and none of them have had a problem or a virus with the patcher, hell i find kaspersky shit compared to other anti-virus programs :bolt: ...

kaspersky was so busy telling me that a new txt document on my desktop was a virus that was absolutely nothing, and then change antivirus to do a full clean... guess what i found..

a few viruses that kaspersky never caught cuz it was obsessed with a blank txt document i made on the desktop.

other then that ya i am not sure what a win32.crypt.bly trojan is never heard of it before.
