[Fix] If you have black characters and you have the DX SDK installed...
If you start up the game and your graphics are all messed up and you have the DirectX SDK installed, you can fix it by opening the DirectX Control Panel, clicking on the Direct 3D 9 tab and making sure you have the Use Retail Version of Direct3D 9 checked. Aion won't work if you try to run it with the debug version.

Related to this, if you ever have the problem where you can't change the setting from debug to retail (or vice versa) in either of the 32 or 64 bit DirectX control panel apps, here is what you need to do.
First, open regedit.exe and find the following entries:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Direct3D
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Direct3D
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D
Each of these is a key that will have multiple entries for it, but the three we are interested in are the following:
EnableDebugging
FullDebug
LoadDebugRuntime
Set all of these to zero. What, it gives you an error when you try to do that? Something like "Cannot edit EnableDebugging: Error writing the value's new contents" is what you get? Well over at How To Take Full Permissions Control To Edit Protected Registry Keys they have the procedure to follow to fix the permissions so you can make the change.
I fought with this for some time to get my 64 bit directx back to retail when it wouldn't go, so hopefully this will save someone some trouble.
