Dedicated Server Host vs. Home Computer Host

I was randomly thinking about this the other day, which is better? A dedicated server or using a home computer? I understand the specs needed for the server to run smoothly, but I am curious as to other people's thoughts on this. Pros and cons of both choices, if you could. Why pay for a dedi $300+ a month when you could buy a computer with near the same specs for $1000? Wouldn't it be a better investment? Please give input.

Internet Connection. Not to mention you won't be able to use your computer.

Well, if a computer was purchased solely for this purpose, say 32gb ram, etc. And how high would connection need to go? Some service providers say for extra cost they could hardwire connection for faster connection. Like T1-T3 line or even more?

Why would you even think of a home PC being better...I see 0 pros in hosting from your home.

Running on a home computer you will not be able to handle alot of people due to the connection speeds. But if for some reason you have a t5 line to your home i don't see why not. Running on a basic home pc will tax it pretty bad unless you build a damn nice pc and it would cost more than 1000 to do it correct. I run my test server at home but i don't have alot of people connect to it (only testers). I can probable handle up to 50-100 people before it would start lagging bad. whan the full server is running it is hard to do any real work on the pc. No graphic programs for sure cause of the ram and cpu it takes to render any real 3d work or large high def pics.

So in regards to running at home i have to say if you are just running for some friends and not planning for 100+ to play, yes build a pc and run it from home but have at least 10mb up and 20 down to keep it smoth.

Thank you, Lugapha, for your detailed response. I understand and I only wanted honest input on this from those who have had experience with developing and hosting.

i have had no problem with running servers on my computer, and using multiple graphic heavy programs all at the same time. but i would go with a dedi if you have the ability. and use a home pc as a test.
