Dialog Problems - Guess It's Time To Make A New Post

As I will bring up a few different topics, and although somewhat talked about in other areas of RageZone, I chose to make this new post. I hope that this is acceptable to all and apolagize in advance if not.

Well with the summer over and the kids back in school, and family visiting for the summer now returned home, I now have more time to work on the game rather than playing it.

As mentioned in my previous post, my goal is to have a pServer exclusively for myself and family to play on, with no intentions of going public. The only possible exception might be a sudo public situation to allow some family not here in my local network to play along with us.

Once again I want to take the opportunity to thank you all. I enjoy learning and have learned much from many of you through this forum. I have tried not to be a bother to anyone and believe in working things out through research, study, and hands on application and practice. Being spoonfed is counter productive to learning, which is an important goal of mine.

I have a working version of the game here which we much enjoy playing. I have added a good deal of content since the original set up, done some basic mod's and customizations, none of which are any major technical accomplishment. Having said all of this (and i apolagize for getting wordy) there are a few areas I could use some help with

Quests: When attempting to make new or modifying existing quests, I originally believed I was not using the iQuest tool properly. Another post here in RZ discribes glitches in the shn editors when editing the dialog files. Edit & save with v3 , which will glitch the file, and then open and save with v1 or v2 to unglitch.

New NPC's: I have created new NPC's only to discover they would not function when clicked on. The solution (as discribed by Sailor Moon in another area here in RZ) is to modify the NpcDiolageData file.

I have v3d and v3f of the shn editors and after searching for v1 and v2, discovered they are in the Catalyst files provided by Lugapha. (btw, Lugapha, thank you for you generous contribution, I have had much fun with some of the content you provided) The password for v2 seems to have expired which leaves me with v1.

    The problem:

NpcDialogData: using v3, I copy an existing row (close to what i want) and paste/import it at the bottom of the table. Then edit the ID # to the desired #, edit the dialog, and then save. When I close and then re-open the file the newly created row is missing and performing searches for any of the content of that row results in nothing. Oddly enough the row count has increased by 1. Opening the file with v1 still does not find the newly created row and when saved the entire table is scrambled.

The above discription is similar to what i experience with the quest dialog table as well.

I am obviously missing an importan detail, overlooking something simple, possibly have the wrong tools, or just simply way off on my technique. Some kind advice here would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

    @ ham

By my own admission I did get VERY wordy, which is a tendacy of mine, and for that I appolagize. So here it is, sumed up in 5 sentances:

NpcDialogData: using v3, I copy an existing row (close to what i want) and paste/import it at the bottom of the table.
Then edit the ID # to the desired #, edit the dialog, and then save. When I close and then re-open the file the newly created row is missing and performing searches for any of the content of that row results in nothing.
Oddly enough the row count has increased by 1.
Opening the file with v1 still does not find the newly created row and when saved the entire table is scrambled.

try saving it in a different spot? Im kinda tired so im just thinking same time as typing but it might be permission errors (for example, save it to your desktop and then replace it.)

Re: Guess It's Time To Make A New Post

Ok, after taking a break from this and working on some other game issues I came back to this. Here is what i found:

Note: all work done from desktop and all run as administrator

open then edit then save using v3 and then open and save with v1 resulted in glitched / unusable file ( dialogs displayed on screen trashed)

I did discover that I could open the dialog file with v1 and edit then save which resulted in expected favorable results. Seems as though v3 is not necessary. For me personaly, I found it much easier to copy the desired text to notepad, edit/repair and then paste back in to the table. (if creating a new dialog, copy one close then modify)

Realize this is "small" stuff but hopefully this will help someone else that may experience the same issues

    Best regards to All
