Max # of character increase

Is there a way to increase the maximum number of characters a player can create (and use); if so, could someone teach me how to do it?
*This would be for a private non-public server.

It might be a very simple and obvious process, editing a few numbers somewhere, but just a tip or hint in the right directions would help me figure it out for myself.

Can't anyone help? I've been looking for a week! I just want to be able to create and play one of each of the different types of characters and I'm just one slot short on any single account.

That's ok. I just did the ole' stand by and created another account and plopped my Cleric on it. Not pretty or smooth but it works.
