It matters on how many maps you have active on the zone. The maps are what use so much ram. As you add more maps the ram usage will increase. My server uses 7.5gb to run with 119 base maps.

I'm sorry for not expressing myself fully, yes Lugapha is correct. Also, you need to remember ram for the players that will be roaming around on your server. ;)

if u want that all zones run perfect, you need more than 6 gb of ram.

On Linux machines it works nice with the server setup as virtualbox giving it enough RAM per swap when using a SSD harddisk for swap. Only that this harddisk will have no long life.
For a successfull running server that lasts longer than few days you should have 8 GB RAM as minimum. Better have 12 as a little puffer.
