I've been using Hamachi for a few days now to make my server public. theres only a few people in the game because it's only family and friends at the moment but i've not had any issues with lag

Kinda necrod this, but it also helps to use hamachi. It is really simple to use, and can be made so that not just anyone can access your server. Just a suggestion.

Hamachi is mostly a bad idea if you really want to make a serious private server.

Since users have to download the program and mostly dont want to.

Also note that Hamachi has very limited bandwidth speed for non-enterprise users, so useing it, you or your players will most likely experience hellish lag/lat

Are these ports that are needed used to make the server public? Yeah i necroed, but with good reason. lol
