You can try the command "/rmvnpc XXX" where XXX is the ID number.

I heard it works for mobs to remove atleast.

That /rmvnpc works fine, to find the NPC ID you have to open the debug menue and select the button that makes the ID show, then use /rmvnpc
this works fine, however if you wish to PERMANENTLY remove them, you must delete every file that has ANYTHING to do with mailbox. (AND remove the npc ingame)
/rmvnpc removes the npc, but not permanently; as soon as you restart your world server, they will be back.
I edit NPC coordinates, add new NPCs or remove existiong ones using Beast World Editor. I heard that you can use some other program, but using BWE seems the easiest and clearest to me.
