    Linux Server or Windows Server

So i'm really interested to setup a private server on a vps server. I'm fairly familiar with a linux server and more at ease with its administration than a windows one. SO I guess my question is:

Will flyff run on a linux platform?

I haven't taken a look at the compiled source files as my laptop is not installing Visual Studio 2003.

    Thanks ahead for the insight.

I've tested v15 files with the latest WINE and it's no longer working. As for server-side software, it uses MSSQL and unless you can get Microsoft SQL Server to run flawlessly under WINE, then you have to run it under Windows. So basically, you have to use it all under Windows.

I think you will run into too many problems trying to run linux but I could be wrong. Windows is usually the typical choice for private servers.

I wasn't thinking of running it over wine, but directly via Linux. As for the database, I've seen some databases shifted over to mysql (which again im more familiar with).

But yes, should things turn harder than I foresee, then i'd definitely have to run it over a windows vps.

I guess its a matter of preference. I use windows everyday but I feel more secure and get a better option to secure my server when its linux. Performance is also a whole lot more better.

Thanks for the feedback so far guys.

    Cheers

Re: Linux Server or Windows Server

You COULD convert the databases to MySQL, but the actual game client uses MSSQL queries directly to the database, so it wouldn't work unless you're using an emulator and they have their own databases. So, no, you can't do it until MSSQL functionality is natively available on Linux, which is an EXTREMELY remote possibility (like 0.00000000000000000000001%) because Microsoft chooses not to make that part of the business cross-platform.

As for your reply to the other poster, no, in this case it's not a matter of preference, it's a matter of software and since there is no MSSQL server software available for Linux (I know, I've looked), then you HAVE to run it on a Windows PC. Sorry bro.

No You Can't Run Or Create Your Own Private Server On Linux Because I Think WINE Don't Install MSSQL And Other Things...

Nod, just what I've figured out earlier as well because the server files end with .exe

Thanks for taking time to post. Really appreciate the assistance. Guess I'm going to be stuck with a windows vps.
