But to respond to this, he must have a router somewhere else he cannot get internet. Even if there is a switch between him and the "internet" there must be a router somewhere. It is possible that he cannot connect to the router because the router has a different type of address then he tried.
However you can NOT connect to a switch, and a switch cannot be used to portforward as the switch has no routing functions. The switch does not hide other computers. It does not translate network addresses.
