As far as ease of use goes, xampp wins. It's pretty easy if you take the time to read the manual.

Your best bet is to go with an actual hosting company or run apache/litespeed or lighthttpd on a dedicated linux system of your own, like I do with fame.

What you're suggesting isn't "user friendly" though, and people these days have lost the ability to read manuals. You shouldn't ever use a LAMP server in a production environment, but most people just want a quick solution.
The easiest solution is XAMPP/WAMP, but the best solution is Linux/Windows + Apache + PHP. Best meaning you're not gonna get easily hacked by flaws in the all-in-one program
Cherokee/nginx + Linux?
I've heard of nginx, but I don't know much about it. If you know what you're doing with it, you should be fine.

nginx = Off by one overflow (0-Day).
Used it against a game company awhile ago to steal some files after auditing the shit for like 2 weeks straight, still hasn't been patched either.

Go use wamp, i found it to be easiest for home pc. Otherwise get a VPS server 15$ month and you can start your website in no time.
I fixed the Appserv with MSSQL, And It's working great. Maybe I'll write a guide soon how to.
