The same could be said about now. The difference is back then only about 5 active teams of people in v83 to v88 could actually update. Also during the first stages of v88 only 1 team had daily content. During v95 everyone was still doing v75 and v83 and no one had the skill to update either. Again, only about 5 active teams knew how to update.

Kinda right, tho more is popping up. I know about 5 groups that are developping v166. And all are currently planning on opening a server with it. The only thing is that it's all private obviously. Looks more like there's going to be a new wave of up-to-date servers. might also lead to more higher versions released, since it opens a window for v15X to be released since it's no longer of use. As for the versions inbetween, well those same teams are capable of and have most versions. There's just a lack of people showing it on a development platform like ragezone. Hell as far as i know I'm the only one planning to release useable higher versions at the moment.

I meant that more people know how to update now. Back then literally only 5 active teams at most had the capability to update to v88 (localms, moongrams, destinyms and maybe farmerstory to some extent, quite possibly a few more but only the first 2 had loopbacks that were shared with players. this makes them actual teams that could update and play large scale... v95 days only nido/extalia updated to a public server and only about another 5 teams were trying to update). The difference now is more than 5 groups for sure know how to update.

I'd also say that the development community is also reaching an era of finally branching out past java and odinms to other languages (golang, C#, python, node.js, etc). Which has potentially slowed down some progress on public odinms releases, or atleast keeping up-to-date.

Oh yeah, you're right about that for sure :P Waaay more people should be able to update at least to a playable extent by now.

I think this is indeed very important right now. Of all the people I know less and less are staying with java. A few re-code java from scratch (finally) but most change to C#, hell even I just joined a C# project.

Maybe you guys are right and it is a bit of a dark era again, but i see a lot of opportunity for it to turn into the best era yet.

Nobody cares about actually maintaining and developing sources after they are released. Just look at Moople. That thread has well over half a million views, so it could have as many as tens of thousands of downloads. Still, despite the thread and source being 5 years old, if you download the latest version and play it for 5 mins, you'll find a bug, probably an easily fixable one, too. Still, nobody has yet to seriously fork Moople publicly and fix even the easy bugs because it's easier to just wait for Kevin to do it.

Solaxia was released, a giant improvement over clean Moople, and still no forks anywhere, because it is still easier to wait for Kevin to release another revision of Moople, or for another server that is currently using Solaxia as their base to eventually release their improvements. As long as it is a more attractive option to simply wait for somebody to release their work rather than actually help and contribute, you will continue to have this "dark era".

RZ has plenty of resources and tutorials on practically every aspect of development. Not only that but the help section is extremely active and there are many people around here, including myself, who won't turn down a legitimate request for assistance. Let's not pretend RZ is a wasteland with no guides anywhere and that if you're not working at Google, you're incapable of contributing anything of value back.

There doesn't exist a v95 localhost. The only localhosts available in version 9x is 90 and 97.3

Getting a MSSetup of v97 would be hard enough, let alone the patch for it :S

how hard was that :P as far as i'm aware, wz files don't have specific versions; thus, only thing different from .1,.2,.3 is the client itself. All you needa do now is find the localhost somewhere
