Why are there only very old versions or v117 or v140+

Kinda right, tho more is popping up. I know about 5 groups that are developping v166. And all are currently planning on opening a server with it. The only thing is that it's all private obviously. Looks more like there's going to be a new wave of up-to-date servers. might also lead to more higher versions released, since it opens a window for v15X to be released since it's no longer of use. As for the versions inbetween, well those same teams are capable of and have most versions. There's just a lack of people showing it on a development platform like ragezone. Hell as far as i know I'm the only one planning to release useable higher versions at the moment.

v117.2 and such were very popular before windoes 8 and 8.1 but then everyone realized that 117.2 didn't work with it.

For version 88, well that is not a version i like, it is just before the big bang, has potentials, dual blade,evan,terrible class balance etc. If you develop this version, than better go straight to the bigbang patch, or go to a lower version witch doesn't have aran,even,duel blader (my opinion)

To go off of what @Hilia said, v88 is pretty hard to code/keep up with as well. The released v88 has a lot more things fixed, but also a lot of broken stuff as well. What me and my friend did is take the v88 and moved it to v90 (Cause localhost). Even with that we had a really hard time just getting in-game. Tropik is really buggy as well. Once we finally finished that, it took us a really long time, and then not to mention the class bugs as well with Evan and Dual Blade.

Also there is no public client for v117. It is just a redirector.

As far as i know, there isn't. If you're wondering you can try it out. Grab solaxia, any v117 source, localMS and a bit of IDA knowledge and you'll have a pretty decent v88 running within a week. Which bring me to my point: If it were really worthwhile, it would've been done by now. Why wasn't it done when v88 was a thing? Well simple, less available resources. There was no solaxia, there was no v117 to steal for example potentials from. And i doubt there was as extensive IDA knowledge as there is today since the v95 leak was, well, later obviously.

I'm with @hillia on this, if you are planning on doing something in this range, you might aswel just jump to v9X with the bigbang patch.

It wasn't done when v88 was a thing because no one knew how... this was over 5 years ago. What were we doing 5 years ago?

I think the v90 is the best version that I had played, but nowadays nobody takes the risk of host one.
I think if someone host a pretty "lowrate" and decent v90 could get too many donations.

The community is divided into two, the old maplers and the new maplers.
The old maplers stick to v62 and v83 while most of the new maplers or those that have no care for the old maplestory go with the latest versions.

For me personally, I don't hate or dislike the old maplestory, because its just the old maplestory at some point it was the newest version. But I cannot play the old versions anymore because of lack of content and just overall its too old for my taste. I
