As awesome as that would be I'm not sure you would get a good turnout. It would be too inconvenient for most people. Its a lot easier and less costly to just use a VPN. The main problem would be the lag. At least for me anyway.
My mate and I use Free P2P VPN software - Wippien.
While you could use something like hamachi or comodo unite wippien is just so easy to setup and use.
Maybe sometime in the future when I become rich (This is inevitable) and have mastered time manipulation (this too is inevitable) I will be able make a actual lan (hosted on one the moons of some undiscovered plan which I will own).
