    [Dev]PokeAres - Open Source - Community Project

    PokeAres

So I've been out of the Pokemon development scene for quite a bit, or actually RaGEZONE in general.
And this is one of the thing I had interest in developing.
It's going to be completely open source and there may be a game server for it (If there's a demand). Even if there will be a server, it'll still be open source.

This entire project will be based off on where I left off, which was PokeAres

    Vision
Creating a central and big community revolving around Pokemon development

@develix, In relation to this project, programming, I can do graphics as well, but I'd prefer focusing on the programming part / managing it (If I do manage to find team members)
Anyway, a subversion link or probably a release will be added soon.
Just finished updating all the libraries and testing that it works (Starting part and battles at least).

Should't new pokemon mmos focus on creating web based games? - as pokemmo already took the program based client way.

I have really good web based pokemon mmo sources, not browsergames, games based on pixi js engine or impact engine with a websocket connection.

I saw it's possible to read roms through javascript - Wouldn't be it fantastic to drag and drop a rom inside the browser window to start playing? It'd be a legal way also.

Re: [Dev]PokeAres - Open Source - Community Project

I'm not a fan of web based games tbh. It just doesn't give the same experience a user would get when using an application.
And I believe that an application would have much more control over the game as well.

However, I may be porting the entire game to use libGDX which is cross-platform. This would mean it would work on web and android and perhaps iOS as well, however of course, not as great if it were to be developed natively for each platform.

Also, to top it off, I'd rather use what may be months or even years to develop something in Java than spend the time learning up web based games / libraries I'm unfamiliar with as I might spend long hours developing it, only to find that it's limited in a way or another which would halt the development.

Hey! Thanks for the offer. I certainly do appreciate it. As there are a lot of performance fixes for the current source, I think I'll most likely stick with it. As I can't remember how far I've coded it as well. But I do remember fixing a lot of performance issues. I'll definitely check your source as well though, and I'll take what's necessary, credits given of course :).

Also, a tester would be great! As for hosting, I'm a hosting provider actually, so I can easily host it, but I don't think I'll turn this into a server right just yet. As for web design, I'll take you up on that offer! But we most probably don't need one right now though. Until we do decide to have a server.

Anyway, I've dropped you a PM.

What kind of graphics are you targeting like what game (RSE/LGFR/DPPt/...?) ?

    - - - Updated - - -

Also take a look at HikariCP. It is a great JDBC connection pool. https://github.com/brettwooldridge/HikariCP

Hm, what problems does it have? If you can tell me in detailed I may be able to fix it.

Yea, of course new functions / features are welcomed. But right now, we're focusing on fixing the core itself rather than add in features.
So all features will be listed down first and will be implemented in the future if it's accepted.

We're not sure which direction we're going to go for in the future. But the graphics should be relatively easy to change.

As for connection pooling, I might use c3p0 instead though. As I've used it before.
But I'll definitely check out HikariCP. Thanks!

If you need help with HikariCP, contact me. It is easy to setup. I myself managed to get 10k+ insert queries a second.

That certainly does look fast. But c3p0 is pretty fast though. I've seen other comparisons that put Hikari and c3p0 almost the same, albeit slightly slower.
But it's easy to misconfigure, which could cause it to perform much slower.

I'll definitely let you know when I do decide to switch. Working on other parts of the game atm. But connection pooling is definitely on the list.

    Update:
We're moving to libGDX now. So cross-platform will be in the foreseeable future.
Thus, we're basically recreating the client from scratch and we are no longer using Slick2D.
