! FPS issues with ATI HD graphics

Seems like it's a common problem without a common fix, but I am almost certain I have found a reason for it.

The huge FPS loss (in my case from ~140 down to 5, running on Radeon HD 6870) is caused by the lens flare effect created by the sun/moon. It might be some other lightning effect combined with it, but the drop does occur when the flare becomes visible on my screen.

Now, I have googled for a long time and none of the "try various drivers, update .NET Framework + DirectX + Visual C++ libraries" suggestions worked.

So the question is: Is it possible to remove that particular effect from game? And if not, do you know what files are responsible for it?

So far I have tried the following files and none of them are connected with the acutal lens flare:
    Spoiler:
    details_lens.dds
    lens_yellow.dds
    lens_violet.dds
    flare_00.dds
    flare_01.dds
    Flare_0.dds
    Flare_1.dds
    Flare_2.dds
    Flare_3.dds
    Flare_4.dds
    Flare_5.dds
    Flare_6.dds
    moonflare.dds
    sunflare.dds

I've also tried removing the moon and sun from the game completely, but it either did not work or made the game crash.

Could anyone let me know if there is any kind of fix to this? Thanks!

It's not my graphics card. I can play BF Bad Company 2 on max details with over 100 FPS, and RYL2 normally goes around 140/150 FPS.

I am running on Win XP x86 Service Pack 3.

Try dual booting with windows 7, and try playing on it. It could be that incomplete drivers were released for windows xp.

Install windows 7 with the latest drivers for your GPU.

But it worked fine on previous (and to be exact, Ruins of War) server, and I used the same drivers.

I am waiting for a brand new harddrive and I will be going for Win7 x64 Ultimate, and hopefully that will resolve the problem.

But for the time being I am still getting slaughtered in those rough fights in GF valley, lol.

So I've installed a ryl1 client and it's exactly the same.

But even before that I have tried playing either version on Vista and 7 (both x64), and even though the sun/moon problem was gone, with ryl1 I was getting weird lines and squares appearing, as well as lightning problems all the time.

I didn't buy a high-spec PC to play RYL, for God's sake why would I? I am preparing myself mainly for Guild Wars 2 and Battlefield 3.

Also, there is nothing to format on my PC. I am using 3 clean harddrives for 3 different OSs; XP x86 SP3, Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 and Win 7 Ultimate x64.

Try a System restore first! Formating or Upgrading Windows is the last thing you may do.

Once again, there is/was nothing to restore. I have first tried on my oldie WinXP, then did clean installs of 3 different OSs (inc. XP) on 3 brand new hard drives.
