idea Could not log in to server

    Hello :)

I am using 343's great complete package and everything worked until now. I have just finished setting up my server and tried to log into the game. I've made a character and whenever I click on "Start" the game says "Could not log in to game" and after that it says "Disconnected from game, please log in again". I've also noticed that my character is level 0, which is kinda weird.

Inside pwAdmin it says "Map Service ./gs 0 Offline" which is most likely the problem here. I've tried restarting the map service a bunch of times but it keeps going offline. I've done everything 343 did in his tutorial video/guide and I've already searched the forum but couldn't come up with anything helpful since I didn't configure any gshop file or something like that.

That's what I've been doing the whole time and it says everything is Online but I can't log in. And whenever I click on "Server Control" while being on the server control page, the page reloads and maps are Offline again.

    Check:
    Elements.data - if server side
Gshop.data - if u added an item that it isnt in elements.data
Npcgen.data - usualy tiderborn NPC may crash map.
Remeber what u edited and look again and make sure u didn everything 100% perfect.

I didn't edit anything, everything is on default, like 343 intended.

That didn't work either. I don't wanna re-setup the whole server, I'm 100% certain that I didn't do anything wrong, I've double checked everything for the second time now, everything is the way 343 has did it in his video.

Though, at this point I thank everyone for the help I got so far, +rep for ya'll!

Think Ozuru trolling again, that command only starts things up but forks processes and then calls /dev/null. I think he wanted to just troll you with dumping output from the call into /dev/null but he failed.

He isn't... You obviously have no idea what it does...

Do I need to make a giant image that explains all the parts again?

Re: Could not log in to server

I have heard of * one * other person saying something about having chars 'born' level 0. I do not even honestly recall if they also had problems keeping maps running.

Sadly, if it is 'this messed' up your only real option may be to re-install. Sometimes, even when you do stuff right 'something' still goes wrong =\ [and if you only knew how many times I have installed my release for testing alone {I'm talking in the xxx,xxx number range!}]

If you would desperately like to avoid having to start all over, you could try to clear the game DB (just delete all files in /PWServer/gamedbd/dbhomewdb/dbdata/ and in /PWServer/uniquenamed/uname/dbdata/), but if it still messes up you will want to most likely keep re-installing until it works the way it's supposed to

/dev/null means he is writing out the logs to the trash pretty much. It is a perfectly valid way of starting programs if you don't want any out put. I does nothing to the program itself.

Oh what the heck, I made it anyway

Don't assume someone is trying to fuck you over if you don't even know what they said. Some simple research into pipes and redirects would show you what he did...

    Not seen people try

    &> /dev/null &
before, how it works? is fork, redirect, fork

I see picture and apologise - is easy to assume with him - last advice I saw he was telling people "rm -rf" to fix problems

It isn't fork, redirect, fork... If you knew how redirects worked you'd know that you could use &> to redirect all output...

A quick Googling for "bash output redirection" would get you this
    I/O Redirection

Which is an absolutely essential guide if you want to do any modicum of shell scripting

    &>filename
    # Redirect both stdout and stderr to file "filename."
    # This operator is now functional, as of Bash 4, final release.
and Bash 4 has been out for several years now...

Re: Could not log in to server

Ugh!! Now I've used VBox instead of VMware even though I prefer VMware over Vbox but anyways... I've set everything up and it seems to be working, I don't have the old problem anymore, well kinda, now when I try to log in I get "error retrieving character information for this account!" and then I get disconnected. All services are running though (yes even the maps!).

I've tried searching the forum without much success and I've tried to delete all accounts/characters and make a new one, but that didn't work as well.

Argh, I'm so close to have this thing working!

Edit: Oh and all characters are level 0...
