See - if they were leaked (or 'borrowed'/stolen) and only one person had it, they could have nailed that one person to the wall (and possibly even got it back so it didn't spread)
but once it's out and spreads -- there's no way you'd ever eliminate it, because you'll have the guy like me who tinkers around with it and doesn't even "run" his own server ;)
The more it gets out there the harder it is to stop it :D
So that's why we also say, even if it's not true {yet}, if someone does have or ever does get the "real" 1.4.4 files (or even an emulator because they can have those shut down too) they NEED to be shared, because otherwise you may as well walk into the companies headquarters and turn yourself in because you'll stick out like a sore thumb...

and on a side note, I actually hypothesize (and have for some time) that the company intentionally released the files themselves (IDK, maybe to attempt to gain popularity, or for whatever reason!); because it's all kind of convenient how the real server files are 'leaked' -- when how many games of this type have "real server files" available... If I am not mistaken PW is one of MAYBE a few, if not the ONLY one (most are EMULATORS)!!! Additionally I find it kind of convenient that after this "leak" they totally change their 'software' so that we cannot connect to the old server with the new client, physically changing how their client/sever behaves... Then not to mention of course ALL the shitloads of stuff they add to the one that conveniently hasn't been 'leaked'!!! IE: all the expansions that have since came out -- all the things from the two new races/four new classes, genies, auto pathing, item linking, monster HP count etc etc etc... !!! That's the other thing -- Not only is PW one of if not the only game that has an 'official server file "leak"', but it happened SO QUICKLY after it's release ---
I'm sure that could very well be possible, of course there are a million other possibilities too. Ranging from a rogue employee or former employee, or a data center employee, or initial security issues; who knows -- but really I think my little hypothesis seems a little more realistic to me. I mean with highly commercial games (such as WoW) who wouldn't want to make their game a little more popular
--so think about it, and draw your own conclusions--
But personally; I really am thinking the company or one of it's subsidiary's intentionally released the server files in an attempt to gain popularity and therefore money...
