Yes, 8GB is not too bad -- but you will not be able to simultaneously run all instances. I know for a fact, my own release, requires (I recommend) a MINIMUM of 16GB to run ALL instances simultaneously. That's prior to factoring in any additional necessary ram due to player load. What I think I would actually recommend (for my release anyway) would be 32GB of ram (which is what my server has, and it operates flawlessly)
32GB is a lottttttt of money tho, although it is a perfect amount
I wonder how much ram pwi has...

More then likely they have it split over multiple servers. Such as each map has its own dedicated server(s). Definitely at least one dedicated for the database. As efficient as MySQL is under a large load, you basically need a dedicated server just for it and I know very well gamedbd is nowhere near as good as MySQL. A PWI server I'd guess would be at least 20 individual servers to run as smooth as it does with that many players.

O.o i have since 3 years a 4GB Ram server. And i have all dungeons open! from a01 till a40 (custom include) + arena + every tw O.o so why should i need more then 4GB? Server runs smoth with (date 2009) 300 - 400 players O.o![]()
i juz knw bout ingame thing..i hv been GM for 1 year plus
You're crazy! All the testing I've done with my 'release' I've found that a good 'absolute minimum' is 16GB!
I have found that for a (small) P Server, 32GB seems to be a sweet spot... but 4GB :o I do not know how you can run every map on only 4GB... I do not think it's even possible, physically, because I could NOT run all instances on 8GB !!!
Other than that, I would have to agree with Das, Only way I could see that MAYBE even working, would be a GIANT swap (on its own drive)...

Not really, I've purchased high end servers with 16/or/32GB of ram for like $200 (whole machine not just ram)
Also, it's not a LOT of ram by anyone's standards anymore. You wanna see a server I would REALLY like to get:
HP ProLiant DL900 Servers - comparison results Small & Medium Business - HP
There ya go, how would you like to have 2TB of ram !!! *drooling* ...Annnnnnnnnnnd it's anticipated to be expandable to 4TB in the future *Drooling more*:
HP ProLiant DL980 G7 Server series overview - HP Small & Medium Business products
HP ProLiant DL980 G7 Server series specifications - HP Small & Medium Business products
Anywhoot I can keep dreaming, because higher end machines like that are "Starting at: $ 36,499.00*" (and ofc do not come with the max ram LOL)
However, to step back toward reality, here is some ram for ya: Dell server RAM - 16GB (4x 4GB) [SNPX1564C/4G] | eBay
So in current 'reality' you should be able to find 32GB for approximately $200 (which is clearly not bad!)
Ok, here's one at a real store vendor: Corsair Memory 16GB Total Memory Size at TigerDirect.com each 16GB ~$150, so that would make 32GB only ~$300 [still, not bad]...
You also just have to keep your eyes peeled! Here was a REALLY good deal (in my onion {opinion}) and the guy selling them had an inventory quantity of *23*: Sun Fire V20z Server 2 x Opteron 2.4GHz 16GB 2 x 73GB - eBay (item 370492041651 end time Jul-16-11 22:25:54 PDT)
That last Sun server is a great deal... Every Sun server I ever used was so absolutely amazing, HP would be right after them though.
You can also get cheap server racks from Amazon

That's quite an accusation o_O
This man is a dickhead, he treats his dev like a slave. He is pissed off because I left. If he wouldn't have treated me this way, and didn't call me a liar, this wouldn't have happened.
How did I damage server? Before I left I installed a mega patch, installing 2 new weapon sets, and a new currency. I did not crash your server, that was the other dev you screwed over.
343 when you refer to 32 GB of ram is that including swap or physical? I ask because my current is running your release with all maps open on 4 GB of physical ram and about 20 GB of swap.

I didnt damage the server personally. Look at the logs...
.-.
swap isn't supposed to be run that way, it really makes me cringe when I see people doing that. Virtual memory was only thought up when it was actually somewhat useful to have (think DOS era, as even a measly 1MB of ram was incredibly expensive/most a machine could really support)
The reason why I love Linux is that it tries its hardest to prevent itself from using swap as it causes major slowdowns, secondary IO (hard drives, optical drives, floppy drives etc) are all incredibly, incredibly slow while RAM is quite fast (and the CPU can access directly, CPU has to request to get anything from secondary storage)
The highly recommended size for swap is AT MOST twice the amount of physical RAM you have, using FIVE TIMES the amount of physical RAM is insanity in every sense of the word.
I'm talking 32GB physical...
I have two machines with 16GB and another two that have 32GB ea.
So actually if you want to count them all (not that I'm running a single server split up on all of them though) I have a grand total of 96GB of ram (that's just my servers)...
