Ram is not that expensive anymore -- go buy some ;)
If you have a DDR3 motherboard, one of my older machines (only like 2 years old too :< ) has DDR2 and that is insanely more expensive then DDR3 right now...

our machine has 16 and we use 7 with 200 online and all maps.
I am not doing anything wrong... However, I think our definitions of 'all maps' is the difference. I don't know how many 'all maps' is for you, but I know for me ALL maps means FIFTY (50) maps.Spoiler:

Yeah every case is different. Depend of the amount of maps you need to launch.
Number of players online has nearly no effect on ram used, to know how much ram you need roughly count 1GB for main world and then 256-500MB (depending on size) per extra instance. You can even run a test server with 256mb of ram and 3 map loaded if you have enough swap.
