why you must rent a server, if you want a realy cheap Private Server, you only need to put yer server at home, and buy a domain, and get a super fast connection to yer home.
and BTW i don't need 6-10 RAM to run all instance, long time a go at my dorm, when i still in colage, i run it with stand alone PC UBUNTU LINUX with Solo Core P4 2,5GHZ, 1 GB RAM, 20GB HDD with, all instance RUN, 50 player OnLAN per night at my dorm, and my player's never got lagging problem's.

i have +-500 player online on my server, when you first starting server, yes it's minimum memory will be used, after 3-4 days, it will be increase, player using auto clicker or bot its will increase proccess. sometime u will got 100% cpu and memory, but not to long, and sometime proggrams will do auto killed with max used proccess, it's world map. i have this problem with 8gb memory, after i upgrade to 16gb and increase bandwith, it's solved much problem, and now i use 32gb memory. it's my experience in 1 years, from 4gb memory to 8gb to 16gb to 32gb, it's not my analysis

You were probably using quite a lot of swap then
Re: looking for host for PW server
Isnt swap too slow ? i tried on mah testserver @ home and when i used swap ( sure i dont have 15000 rpm HDs, just 7200 rpm ) it was slow like hell and client lost connection all the time. when i changed back to real RAM only all was fine.
looks like we go offtopic now :D:

Swap isn't that slow unless you have like a 100 rpm hdd from 1983

Maybe it was that slow because i need to defrag :D: but i hate to wait that defrag finishes 6 TB Data :D:

Almost all Linux file systems dont need to defrag o.o
Esp considering the default for most distros is ext3 and a lot are converting to ext4...
And swap is a dedicated separate partition/drive so fragments couldn't possibly be it...

True but mah testserver is in a vbox so the "swapdisk" is a file on windows file system and this can be fragmented like hell because i last run defrag ~ 1 year ago.

I have a server box specifically dedicated to running vms for me, virtualbox is my preferred platform but I can run xen and vmware as well
That technically wouldn't be caused by linux swap making a slowdown though... thats just windows being retarded

For the most part Linux is very good with large swaps and low ram as long as whats running doesnt need the disc to much you probably wont even notice it
Re: looking for host for PW server
memory is better than virtual
if you are faced with the reality, you would not say so, and forget what his name swap

It obviously is better, but I was just saying that linux is good at being able to not slow down that much with a large swap

yes i agree with you, but we talk about live server, dupe & other problem, its cannot solved by swap.

on a double posting side note (Rawr fear my double posts) i had my friend host a server on his pc with i think... 200 gb... and it was ok till like 7 ppl got on then it sucked. i couldnt open all dungeons. so 10 gb... im sorry u wont be able to even start it. it will explode and cry. but the rest of his stuff on his pc sucked soo.. its more than just the memory its what i can do with the memory. the best way u can do any thing would to be buy a really dang good server. like 1 tb at least and quad core... good motherboard.... with a good just about every thing and get a good uploading isp and u wont pay any thing besides internet fee. i mean u pay like 120$ just for renting a server on like a medium good one. so l200 a year. i know u can get at least a ok one for that.... i made a custom gammer rig that i can run a server and it cost 600 dollars..... ur devies either are thinking bad or arent real devies. im sorry i hate to be mean but really. its just not right. if u want me to help with what little knowledge i have ill add u on msn and talk to u but i Really want to talk to ur deveis. im sorry i dont understand why.....
