My Noobie Questions

OK, I recently decided to finally get serious about setting up my own PW server because PWI is just getting to be that horrid lately.

And I , of course, started with 343's Complete PWI Package. I have found none better. TY very much for all your work 343.

I went through some kinks over the past 24 hours of setting this up. Right now it's not much, just running on a little Acer L-100 with 2GB ram and a 250GB HD. (Later I'll probably update it, but don't ever have more than 3 or 4 of us on it right now, and finances are pretty tight.)

Oh, and just FYI, I know enough Linux to get me in trouble, but not quite enough to get me back out again. My experience is mainly with Ubuntu Desktop 10.04 and prior, and BackTrac 3 and 4. I am technically inclined though and if I can't work it out, it usually doesn't take me long to scrape up a solution.

Unfortunately, after all of my searching, I've still got some questions that I haven't been able to find.
Anyway, here's my questions and inquiries so that I don't clutter 343's massive thread....

1. How do I change the "Notice" page that appears when the client first opens? Just point me to the file and I'm good to go. I'd probably find it easier with a GUI up, but I screwed the pooch royally on that and may have to re-image the system. (I will likely do that anyway, but only after I've got a backup of the server first.)

2. the GUI, yeah I screwed this one up. here's one for you Linux guru's out there. I used "apt-get install ubuntu-desktop" played with it a little, discovered it was making things harder for me at the time, and removed it using "apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop". Problem is, now I would like to have it again, because I can't seem to mount this network drive no matter how hard I try. Alas, it won't install. It appears to, says loading files, then stops. startx pretends to work, but then fails because it can't find any screens, whatever that means. So I tried removing it again using the purge option, and installing, and it's still not coming up, not on boot, and not with the startx command. (if I can figure out how to get the network share mounted, I won't need the GUI anyway.)

3. Is it possible to change the port from 29000 to something else on the server end? Again, I'm sure it's just a config file to edit, but the only ones I've found so far give me really different port numbers.

4. I would love to add some stuff to my game. These mounts in particular, and I'm not sure how to get them up. Do I have to unpack and repack files on the server? Or is it files on the client? The instructions I was able to find were...

The problem is I don't know which side this is on, what entry I need to make in elements.data, ect.

5. Which leads me into the next question... Anyone know how the heck I mount a network share? I can't seem to get NFS mounting properly. I've got a Iomega NAS device, (slow and old, but gets the job done), and it's configured to handle NFS protocols. It's on IP address 192.168.1.125 and it's windows network name is \\Music. The folder I am trying to get to is \\Music\PWI, but I keep getting errors when attempting to mount it and I'm certain that I've set the permissions and everything properly on the NAS.
either I get an incorrect mount option, NFS doesn't work with that, or permission denied. >.< (I'm sure I could get it working with the GUI in no time flat, but now I've got that screwed up too.)

6. When I try to add items to the characters using the pwAdmin web-page, it apparently sometimes crashes the server. World1 will stop, map service goes offline, and I have to reboot the PC to get everything working again.

7. Assuming I get the extras installed, and an update needs to go out to the clients, how the hell does that work?

8. Last question I swear, is anyone working on, is it possible, or is it out and I just didn't manage to find it...
Wardrobe Stones, Cupboard Stones, and headwear?
Gotta have that fashion extension!

Edit: Always remember something later.... Is it possible to adjust the key commands, like to match the newer client versions on the PWI servers, also, is it possible to make it so the hotkey bars stay expanded after logging out?
Also, I wanted to make it a PVE server. It's PVE by default. I followed this thread and changed the setting from 1 to 0, I also changed my server.ini from

Now it's still PvP, and I don't have the button to go to normal mode. Before I had the button to go to normal mode, but it would revert back to PvP within a minute or so.

As far as the mounts, if you poke around enough in 343's release you will find most of these mounts are already in the files. Not all of them are working or added to elements. There is also this thread by Eistiger with some of the FW mounts and mobs. There are several threads about adding mounts and such from other games.

Not sure, never installed Ubuntu desktop on something that wasn't bundle with it.

Possibly, I'm not sure off the top of my head though.

Client side. Do everything that it says client side, then export elements.data to server side. Basically copy how existing mounts are done.

Read this page. Funnily enough I just found it today on a completely unrelated matter.

If you edit your character incorrectly it only crashes the map your character is on. Simply remove what ever caused the crash and restart the map and all will be good. You don't have to restart the server every time. Another thing is if you have other people on your server while you are editing things make sure you goto to and unused map somewhere. That way only that map will crash and you wont kick everyone from the server.

7. Assuming I get the extras installed, and an update needs to go out to the clients, how the hell does that work?
CPW or sPatch. Look them up there are some guides around.

8. Last question I swear, is anyone working on, is it possible, or is it out and I just didn't manage to find it...

Um idk about the first two but they probably don't work in our outdated files. The last one you can replace existing head fashions afaik but thats it....

Could be a few things, usually a 'bad item' (item ID too high etc...) I would also recommend making sure the character and account are logged out at the time of any modification (although I know some CAN be made while logged in - I still log OUT)...

Best thing to do (since it could be so many things) is to check your error logs, always check error logs (/PWServer/logs for the server and /element/logs for the client) to help you figure out what is wrong (or to help us help you )

Since you're using my release, you actually have two choices. I have included sPATCH and CPW with my release. You can search for info on how to use either within these forums

Also, LOL @ 343 being a dick, I actually spent about 4 hours going that route. Drakaer's link is one I hadn't come across yet, so I'll try that method. I just can't for the life of me figure out why it won't connect. Prolly something I need to add to the hosts, or turn off the firewall. No worries though, I'll either crack it eventually, or use my 16GB thumb drive. Was hoping to be able to set it up so that I could do backups to the NAS and edit/import data from there.
I can't seem to get it to get a remote terminal connection to the server either so I'm starting to think it's the firewall, (even though I'm sure I allowed the ports/protocols for them). I'll have to take it off the public network and give it a go without the firewall later.

I'm an old DOS/Basic hack so the command line interface isn't a problem, but I'm a visual person too so sometimes it's easier for me to think using the GUI. it looks like I've somehow managed to totally hose that though so I'll have to re-image the system to clean it up.

I was really hoping for headwear, love hats and it does have the headgear option. Oh well. some of the clothing isn't dying properly, but I'll figure it out.

One last question, is there a Mystical Librarian or a Boutique Agent anywhere? or can I add them with some spawn NPC command or something?

I need to find someone to pay me to write manuals with all the infos I dig up

To use headfashions simply get PWI's facedata.pck and then add the info for them into elements List 59 & 63. To make them available through character craetion screen just set the class to 255. TO fix clothes to dye properly get sclothfix and use it on all of the fashion dds files in models.

For PVP I don't think chaning thing in Serverlist.txt does anything at all. Its just labels.

Do not forget to look at ADMINNOTES.TXT that is a rather long file -- all my notes since I've been working on PWp...

Drakaer is correct, to change the actual mode of the server between PvP and PvE is set in the gdeliveryd config file with a standard 0/1 switch.

The proceeding number in serverlist.txt is only really there for guild icons/names etc...

to point1:
actually it is a html loaded from server, it only displays the error page if the web page is not available. you can set the page in configs/loginpage.ini with setting for example:

you can even use local files as html page, like the global_api setting does:

so setting "clientnews.html" in you config will open that file inside the elements folder if present, and the error.html otherwise


Note that the "game-internal-browser" lacks any kind of css support and tables,div, font color etc. you can just use size and such.

Yes, I thought I wanted PvP=1 for PvE mode, but when I do that, the characters are white-named and there's no option to switch back. >.<
I'm now trying with PvP mode on, switching toons to blue-name, logging out, shutting down, changing the flag, then starting up again.

Edit: can't get past 105 >.< at 150% exp and not getting exp from mobs, only spirit.

Note to Allisandre: Forget everything you know from PWI. Like new classes, hyper exp, pvp filter, genies, linking item in chat, autopath and most of cool and new things that PWI have.

Here we are using binary files that are realy outdated (leaked in 2008...) and don't have all of those new things.

Now back to your post:
PVP=0 (will set the server in pve mode) but since our serverfiles are old, it doesn't save the mode so when you relog your char he is in pvp mode...

Edit /PWServer/gamed/ptemplate.conf to set the lvl limit. Remember we can't edit the binary code of the serverfiles so forget to get lvl above 150...

About the tempest skill, it's learned at 109 on our serverfiles because it's based on world2.wanmei.com serverfiles wich those skills are learned at 109 and some special skills at 119.

I was really hoping that because there was a box in the fashion window that I could add headgear to the client like adding mounts ect., and would be able to just extract it from newer client data and import it. Looks like that won't be happening. (maybe I'll eventually learn enough to work out a way *crosses fingers*)

I wasn't holding my breath on the wardrobe extension and things like that, but I figured it can't hurt to ask.

Now for the fun of delving into figuring out how to update the stuff on the server-side that I want, and then later getting the update to push out to the clients. (Thank you again for supplying the tools in your release 343, now if only I can wrap my head around how they work and how to use them. Still working out the whole which do I modify on the client, which on the server, and how to get it all put to a patch that goes out to everyone issue. Brain is just not wrapping around it.)

Of course, all this will be easier if I can get remote terminal access to my server and either view the server files from my desktop, or view the NAS files from my server. >.< (That's today's project.)

Edit: Almost forgot, the manufacturing boxes are missing the items to level up. I'm guessing that this is because they were introduced later and aren't something we can have here? Just looking for clarification on that.

Install openssh-server package then you will be fine for remote access...

ok so I took the npcgen.data file, converted it to tab-separated values, then imported it into excel. I then took all the Chinese, copied the column into Google translate and voila! I've got a translation of them all.

It's easier to read in Excel, so I'm adding the file as an attachment.

There IS a way to easily change this, but I admit I DO NOT support it as too many people want even above 150 and I am SICK and TIRED of seeing people ask for "How do I get max level above 150", and personally I think even 150 is overkill since even the 'official game' in its current 'state' lacks the endgame content necessary for even level 105!

I'm still having issues with skills that are unable to be learned.not sure why this is. IIRC, we can't use the 79 skills, but I'm having some issues learning skills that are lvl 92 in normal PW. (not sure what they are in ours because I can't find a reference to it.)

lastly, where is the character database at? I had some ideas about edits but can't find anything other than very basic information using MySQL.

Well you wont find anything except account info in MySQL, all the actual game data is stored in a proprietary Berkley DB in /PWServer/gamedbd/dbhomewdb/dbdata

If you want to edit player character data at all, your best bet will be (the XML) in pwAdmin

well poop. there goes my idea for pet edits. I'll have to try another avenue. For now I'll just overpopulate Room 4 with tombstones for faster pet leveling.

Speaking of pet edits. I swear I saw a photo on there somewhere of someone with Rend Razorjaw as a pet. How is this possible? I'd love to take some bosses, or other mobs and either make them tame-able, or add them to the boutique. (taming mobs, bosses in the boutique)

ok then I must have missed it somewhere. It was like 2am, and I had been digging through elements.data and npcgen.data files all day.

I'm constantly amazed by the things that I discover in this release that are 'just now' being released on the public servers. I discovered guild bases last night. It's pretty empty, but that's going to make a nice little manufacturing center when I get done with it.

Just need to figure out how to use more of these editors. sMAPtool is my next exploration.

well poop. there goes my idea for pet edits. I'll have to try another avenue. For now I'll just overpopulate Room 4 with tombstones for faster pet leveling.

Speaking of pet edits. I swear I saw a photo on there somewhere of someone with Rend Razorjaw as a pet. How is this possible? I'd love to take some bosses, or other mobs and either make them tame-able, or add them to the boutique. (taming mobs, bosses in the boutique)

Its probably was the mother of the pack and not rend razorjaw. However it is possible to make any mob a pet. Don't use all class pets though as they have no attack animations.

Here is what I just did in a few minutes with just elements edits (hexed the class though because I forgot to do it in elements). The mob is the Quillhog Magus and is now completely tamable ingame. It still has the same stats and icon as the overclocked mechacrab however as I was too lazy to change them.

ok I would love to know how you did that. I'm looking in elements.data right now with sELedit, not dunno if I'm in the right place, or just not knowing enough about what this huge stream of values is in the window.

Is that a barb with a attack pet? or is something else going on there? LOL
