    Server Hardware configuration

    Hello hello !

First of all, thanks for the awesome guides, you guys really know your thing... I'm glad to come learn here.

I followed your guides, installed a PW private server on a laptop I had (just to test).
I didn't try it with the client, but the installation went pretty smoothly thanks to your guides (special thanks to 343).

Now, I'm thinking about taking this server thing to the next level, by really hosting a PW server and let people register on it and stuff.

What would be the required hardware configuration for such a server, with the best number of clients connected possible ?

Also, what type of internet connexion ? Right now in my house I have a decent 5 Mbs/sec broadband internet.

    Thanks for your answers !!!

    Re: Server Hardware configuration

depends how many players you want to host.
But 5Mbs/sec is not much at all, not to mention the latency problems with hosting from home.

    Re: Server Hardware configuration

Let's say I want to host 200 players.

What's the internet speed for this kind of hosting ?

I'm aware that hosting from home sucks... But what are the other options ? I'm really new to this...
I tried to install it on a server i rent (like normal hosting) but i don't have the access to the root account (obviously)...

My friend runned a server with 180 players online, with 10MB connection(1mb upload), static IP and bridged modem.

    That's not impossible.

    Re: Server Hardware configuration

For 200 players and all maps online you are looking at 4gb ram and a dual core cpu.

Internet speed is a different one to measure but generally the more the better. The distance to your players is also important for latency (ping). If you wanna host internationally then you are best off with a server hosted in a data center whereas if you wanna host for people in the same country as you then hosting from home is usually ok.

    Re: Server Hardware configuration

Thank you all for your answers !

I think i solved the problem : I'm gonna rent a vServer this way I'll have access to the root, i'll be able to manage my stuff as i want and without a sucky web interface, i'll have a 100 Mbs/sec internet connexion and 8GB of RAM (and a 400 Go hard drive).

But let's keep this conversation going for the next people who would need this info as well.

Do the graphic card count when you host ? For exemple, if you have a killer RAM, a killer hard drive, an internet speed faster than the one from the White House but you have a sucky graphic card, does that "break" the game ?

GFX card is nonfactor when you host.

Server itself does not display anything, does it :)
