    Starting a server..

I want to start a private server since I've played on other ones and have been GM on a server for 2 years, I think I want my own server now ;)

How much does it cost / month? (Answer in dollars)
Would anyone want to help me with it?
Where should I buy the VPS?

    Thanks.

    Re: Starting a server..

Do NOT get a VPS! (Unless amazon EC2) They technically are a VPS, though.

    But listen.

The price varies a lot, it depends who you want to choose.

    Some places to check out:

    1&1 Internet - Home
    Beastserv.com Easy Web Solutions
Hosting and Internet Solutions - OVH
Unmanaged Dedicated Server Hosting in Dallas, TX | Limestone Networks

The processer really doesn't matter, just don't get some BR quality processer. The RAM is the most important.

On behalf of 343, I will say this for him (giggles): Don't try running his release (all maps open) without 16gb ram. He will hunt you down and kill you in the night if you do not use that much ram.

I personally can run about 6 maps on 4gb ram, while having 50 (max peak of 103) online.

You want a 100mbps up and down connection. That matters. If you can afford 1gbps, go for it.

I recommend about 4gb ram per dedicated host, don't try running it on BR ram quality. (That's less then about 2gb ram.)

For hard drive space, I recommend at LEAST 50gb hard drive space. I don't know of many dedicated hosts who give less then 50gb hard drive space, that can run a pw server.

AGAIN: Get a real server. They are more reliable and secure.

Also, I KNOW you are going to ask:

    Spoiler:

HALP MI I DUN NO HOW MAKE SERVER (Optional numerous exclamation marks)

Use 343's release, plain and simple.

Correct, my release needs at LEAST 16 GB of PHYSICAL RAM to have all maps open simultaneously...

If you talk about running it on less, or that dreaded S word that sooooo many people around here have no clue about what it really is or how it works
    Spoiler:
    swap
; I will hunt you down in the middle of the night and lets just say, you will die a slow and painful death...

we run all maps on 12gb ram with forum etc and are just upgrading because some maps tend to crash once a week.

I run 16gb ram on a physical machine (no vm) with static ip. A static ip shaved 15ms ping off connections and physical machine freed more ram. From 3gb to now 5 gb free.

    Ftw!

Very useful because jetty and authd tend to grow quickly in RAM.

    Re: Starting a server..

Try 343's release btw, It is easy to set up and the most up to date release atm I believe.

    Kinda offtopic,
I'm not sure If it is just me or not but after running both yours and ronny's release, yours seems to use more RAM to keep maps open... I can open more maps on ronnys than yours

    However,

Your release loads maps extremely fast, usually after clicking start map it takes ~30 seconds to be able to enter the map but with ronnys release it seems to take a good 5mins...

I thought it was a bit curious but I AM sure of it, I just don't know if is just me or not, I would be interested if anyone else has had the same observations. Could it be something to do with the server setup or something?

Either way, if anyone wants to know, I recommend 343's release, it really is the easiest of them all to setup, and has had a lot of work gone into it, it is very up to date with PWI models etc and there are a lot less bugs/glitches than in the other releases

Edit the start scripts for both of those and add "-Xmx128M" both of them shouldn't really need much more then that... (Since Java is lazy with garbage collection and won't do it unless it can't just allocate more)

For me that is not enough.. because it will run out of memory on sql syncing characters. Some other scripts like "give every account with at least 1 char over 30 a specific item" won't work too. Restarting jetty every 24 hours and restarting authd every 10 min just works fine :D
