    the BIG question (and no, not "will you marry me" LMAO)

    So, my last post:

    Private servers should also not be used as a means for making money. If you use these server files to make money its an incentive to lock you stuff so you can continue making money. Ronny provides a great collection of free tools that we can use to further develop the server so take a leaf out of his book and make free content also. If it wasnt for ronny and a few others the server files wouldnt be developed this far and you would have nothing to use. Imagine no daggers, no water, no 1.4.2 things. You are selling what others have worked on when you sell your private server.

    Also for the other side. Dont just leech or steal off anyone. Take what you get and use it to help develop new ideas and fixes. Learn from it how to build your own content and try it on your own first before asking for help. Its how discoveries are made.

    Lastly anything I make is free and I do not want to see it locked up and hidden from others or sold.

    Anyway thats what I think and Im hoping you dont decide to be one of those people who hides what they make.
    I didn't really want to get involved in this part of the debate, although you mainly covered exactly how I personally feel. I will add that: (I think) We ALL need to remember that our absolute base (the server files) themselves are 'stolen'; NONE of us own that/them ...

    I do this for fun, I do this to further my own personal knowledge and make myself a smarter more knowledgeable individual! Not for financial gain!

    I do also understand not wanting someone to come in, and just take take take take take, and never contribute anything, in any way, to 'the scene', though too.

    As far as anyone who does 'leech' sure they will be around. In my opinion one of two things will happen with a 'leecher' though:
    A) they will disappear from 'the scene' eventually as since all they do is 'leech' they don't have the same level of dedication as us
    B) one day, after who knows how long of 'leeching', they will have an epiphany and wind up making their contribution to 'the scene'!

    and you never know who may come up with what, if they truly are or become dedicated. Example, we may all rip on the guy that comes in asking about TB map area as his first post; but maybe after reading, downloading, more reading, experimenting who knows; that person may just wind up being the one that winds up figuring out how to actually unlock the TB map area (unlikely I know, but I had to make a clear example)...!!!

    My summary -- In short, I view this as an open source community, and anyone who doesn't feel that way doesn't really belong here. They are here only to gain themselves, and not the entire community! If anything I consider them the leechers because all they want to do is benefit themselves instead of the community as a whole. IE. they will keep their developments 'locked' or to themselves, but they will surely accept all the 'open source' work that we DO here...!!!

    (To anyone that has ever made a claim that someone "stole" your work...) I understand that a persons 'work', IS their work. However, in an open source 'scene' nobody can "steal" your work; if it is truly OPEN SOURCE. Perhaps you are not familiar with the concept of OPEN SOURCE -- you can learn more -- [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source]Open source - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame] or about the similar concept of "public domain" here -- [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_domain]Public domain - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]
    Furthermore, if you don't want to consider your work 'open source' or 'public domain', Once again, I feel you do not belong here, and perhaps instead of running a private server (which nobody HAS to do) you should consider moving to sunny California to apply for a job within Perfect World Entertainment Incorporated of America... Where you will in turn receive the monetary compensation that you seek for your 'work', should they decide to hire you !!!!!!!

    I say SHAME ON Emprise or any other person or server that hides or attempts to hide their content! It's those kind of people that should just go work for PWEi as I mentioned above, where work is not open source; although watch out we may one day get it anyway, as we have gotten the 1.2.6 CN leak ;) (or) If you want to keep "your work", 'your work' then do not release it, simply put; if it's not "out there" it cannot be "stolen". This includes in your 'public' private server... {sounds kind'a' ridiculous doesn't it; to make something, for something, that is meant to be seen by many; to only be seen by yourself}

    ps) nothing against any private servers that do take donations (I can totally understand this), this is just my personal 'bit' on me specifically:
    Honestly, I could not visualize myself even accepting donations... As, I have chosen to do this purely as a hobby! There is no need for me to do it. That includes building the dedicated server that I have already begun to build, piece by piece as my personal budget for this hobby allows... or any other real life fees that I may incur! {I am also not in a hurry to get a 'public' private server launched as the 'official' game is still in its "heyday", I reserve wanting to dev/compile a kick ass private server for when the 'official' game "dies" and the die hards will be looking for a good private server to continue to play on ;)}

    Has led me to think about this:

    If you (no matter HOW) came across the OFFICIAL PWi 1.4.2 server files... WOULD YOU SHARE THEM WITH ALL HERE ???

    My Answer : " YES "

    I would, in a heartbeat! Because I am truly genuinely "for" the advancing and development of (all) PW private servers!

    This question is also designed to show everyone that 'fence sitting' is not really possible when it comes to "open source" or not "open source"... You either have to be A) or B)... you are for or against sharing and open source That is my real honest answer though; if I came across them, devved (a mod of) them myself, or ANY method of obtaining them; I would happily share them!

    Sure you could share them with only a select few "friends". Then you have to remember the burden for any advancement is on that small select group of people, opposed to a very large "open source" community (that is in theory limitless in potential expandability)! You also couldn't get angry if someone you chose to share them with decided to 'release' them to the "open source" community; (Everyone is allowed to do whatever they desire with files that reside on their PC last time I checked) as it really is in the best interest for advancement!

    No matter what your personal view is on "open source" here is a good video I think everyone should watch ;)

    My Answer: Yes

    I have no reason to keep the files to myself and dont plan to if I happen to come across them so ofcourse Ill share them. Without sharing there is no room to grow and what I could do alone with the new files is very limiting. However what RaGEZONE members can do with the files is another story. Each person here that is willing to develop has unique skills that when combined can produce awesome work.

    I did not forget it; I did not see it until after I posted this. (sometimes my OCD gets the better half of me and I have to proof-read something like 100 times before I post it LMAO). It was a very good write-up !

    Contents are just contents, be it original, fixed or whatnot it all boils down to creativity. It doesn't matter who or what contents you have, it's a question of what do you do with your contents, I have yet to see a server that has custom storyline that separates his server from the rest. So what if he has the latest mounts? Does he have a custom race called Kame Race, where turtle mounts got speed of 1m/s and you race your players around the 3 racetracks or even around ADC? Something to think about =).

    My answer is yes.

    Anyone would share, for a simple reason: if they dont, pwe would hunt them down and have their skin. Sharing is a form of protection, by spreading it they would prevent pwe from identifying the original hackers and sue them.
    Just imagine a single 1.4.2 server out there, they'd have pwi on their back every single second.

    I'd never be able to come across those files as i'd not even recognize them any different than any other server lol, but if I had access to them yeah sure why not? As long as I couldn't get into trouble legally >.> xD After all, why not share something that's stolen anyways? No point in coveting it.
