need help with finding a server + client....

Could someone point me to a server/client download (with a tut. to get it up and running) that I'd be able to use either VirtualBox or VMware 6.07 (free ver.)? and I was wondering if one of the reasons I have been having so many issues is because I don't have/use mysql? I'd prefer a Virtualbox ver. that has the latest expansion, I have been trying to get a server up and running for nearly 12 hours I'm almost at the end of my wits.

VMware Player is free, and there are plenty of guides to get server files running
