Though Kakashi did have a hard time against Zabuza, a lot has changed since then. Despite that Zabuza was incredibly powerful too; it's speculated he failed coup-detat because it was during the time Tobi controlled the Mizukage. Since then Kakashi also started to show he could use the Mangekyo Sharingan... Though his main weakness is it uses a hell of a lot of chakra, sending him to the hospital for days. Though Kakashi got owned by Pain, who didn't? The only one that could handle himself was Naruto, I mean sure in comparison to Jiraiya (Also a Sannin), Kakashi sucked, but he did sacrifice himself for another.
Though it's debatable whether Kakashi could save the village on a scale like Tsunade did, and improbable, it's a personal preference. I would find Kakashi better in situations that require strategy.
Hopefully you're right about that, Kakashi needs to be shown as super awesome again. Since the land of the waves arc, Kakashi has been out shadowed by everyone else. Especially being the son of "Konohas White Fang", who was apparently more powerful that all the Sannin, apparently. With the whole 'New generation surpassing the previous' crap Kakashi should be more powerful than Tsunade.
Either way, unless they had an arc of Kakashi being Hokage or having a fight with Tsunade, we will never know and it'll just be opinion. :P
We can however agree on one thing... It's getting interesting! :D
