Depends on what you wana play. My suggestion is learn to read tabs, and play some basic guitar riffs from songs you like. For example...Smoke On Water is a very simple song, but that kinda song is great for biginners.

Also...learn the Penatonic Scales...it got me busting out solos in a month.

As far as gear goes....seeing that your going to be paid alot; i'd go with some good gear like Jackson or Ibanez. Washburn is one of my favorite brands personaly. But i fi where you, i'd go to your local guitar shop and try on different guitar brands.

In terms of amps...go with mesa boogie. ;)

The Epiphone G400 is a great learning guitar for the type of sound you want and it has a good price too.

my fender strat was about $700, they're not that cheap... don't know if a strat is a very good starters guitar either, but thats just my opinion. I wouldn't want you to shell out a tun of money and end up not playing very often.

I Already Have An Encore Strat Which I Purchased Not Long Ago And Thanks To MentaL I Got It Working Again - I Thought It Was Damaged But It Turns Out The Guitar Lead Was Snapped Somewhere.

However It's Not A Good Guitar So I Will Upgrade In The Future.

I think you should get either a cheap Gibson or an Epiphone.
