    idea A legal hotel?

    Hi everyone,

My name is Uther (not my real name) and I just joined RageZone. Though I've visited the site many times before I never created an account.

Ever since I was a kid I wanted to create my own hotel. One of the reason I never did was because I didn't like the idea of "just downloading it and you're done". I wanted to make everythingmyself. The second reason was because it was / is illegal.

Now, when you look at this page; https://help.habbo.com/entries/21499...e-Retro-sites-, you'll see the following piece of text:

Practically a basic retro site is violating the following rights of Sulake:

    • They have illegally reverse engineered the obfuscation of Habbo Client.
    • They illegally use our Habbo client software, protected by copyright.
    • They illegally use our graphics, source code and databases, protected by copyright and database rights.
    • They often use Sulake’s protected trademarks, Habbo, Habbo Hotel, Sulake or Bobba.
    • They pass themselves off as authentic Habbo sites and deceive consumers.
So, when you program everything yourself (and I've seen people try, just look at the HTML5 projects at this forum) and don't use Habbo's trademarks, there is only 1 thing on this list left to fix; the graphics.

So I came up with this:

(I doubt someone will, but feel free to use this image. :P)

I know it doesn't look fantastic and some of you probably think it's ugly, but hey, I tried. :P

Now, do YOU think by programming everything yourself and using images like the one above, your retro would still be a "retro"? Or most important, illegal?

    - Uther

(I hope I post this thread at the right board ;3)

It will be legal that way, because you make everything yourself, not sure about the floor though, might just change the color for what it's worth

I really like the style though, I guess it's just a lot of work to make animations for the figure

I actually used the Minecraft character for that. I'm not really happy with it though, but I made this real quick. Mabye when I have more time I can improve the character and maybe make a small room with furniture in this style.

Not the isometric style tho. If you want to make it more legal, change the isometric style OP.

If its all original code, original graphical and sound assets, then its all fine as you're not utilising any copyrighted materials. The isometric style is not a copyright. So, go for it! I look forward to seeing what you make, :).

Oh my , that's ine adorable figure though.

On topic: nope , like what @fallenfate had said wouldn't be illegal at all as long as it's original codes and soundtrack. With some time , you'll find yourself with a good progress dude. Keep it up

No. It would be a whole other game. As the word "retro" implies, it means something old and often nostalgic, I believe much of the point of Habbo retros is to provide the same experience as Sulake. But your drawing is cute :^)

    Re: A legal hotel?

Maybe this can be done, you need do this:

Create a big (REALLY BIG) TODO list of assets from habbo with a link to the asset (in the case of images/sounds/etc. inside swf's the swf + extracted png's, mp3's, etc..)
Then maybe the comunnity can help editing the assets (maybe with a guideline of graphics) and publish so the TODO list got smaller until completed

Then re-insert the assets into the swf containers and also the assets inside the main habbo.swf

Then you will have a client 99% copyrightless, (you still using habbo client code and i think have copyrights too..)

    Good luck!

Neither OP or cooperated team from RZ can replace whole Sulake dev team. (If they could they would do it years ago.)

    Re: A legal hotel?

    Thanks for the compliments!

This week I'm gonna start (trying) making a simple client (in HTML5, because I don't know Flash and don't feel like learning that.. ;3).

    @TheOleg:
I have learned that there is a retro hotel out there somewhere that is similar to my idea, it has re-done the habbo spriters and (almost) doesn't contain any of the official habbo assets.

Ergo, it is a possibility, it might take a while, but as mentioned above this community may be willing to help with the graphical side of the project.

You still use their code. It still wouldn't be legal.

As far as I am aware you can not actually copyright code, or every website would just about be infringing on someones rights with <head> <body> and <html>

First head and body are standard tags of html so you can not copyright that, but what about action script code inside the client swf? and maybe javascript code from the website??

As far as i am actually aware you cannot copyright code as you could have written that code yourself, sulake would need solid proof eg a video of you actually ripping it from there server before any judge in the land would side with them
