A thread with a question I've been wondering for such a long time

For a long time, I've been questioning two things.

1.. What do you think of a sold Habbo emulator? I was discussing with a Dutch forum (they hated me and didn't care about selling Habbo emulators). So what do you guys think?

2.. Do you really think people who can add new commands and change packets can program? Because i've been in the retro community for quite a time (since 2007, on my other account) and I've never understood why people felt so good about creating an edit. In my eyes, creating a edit of Uber, Phoenix or Butterfly doesn't mean you can program. What do you think?

    Thanks for the answers. Greetz.

    1. It's been done before, and look where the owner of that is now. Yep.

    2. No, I mean maybe they can program, but if that's all they can do, than no. Editing does not make you the creator, remember that. I can write a book, if you edit it, does that make you the author? No. I will say that it is a great step towards becoming a programmer, but it's nowhere near the level they should be. Besides, if most of them were able to program correctly, they would realize how most of these emulators are put together terribly and they would probably make their own. (Don't get butthurt about what I just said, I said "MOST" for a reason, not all, but most.)

1.. What do you think of a sold Habbo emulator?
Personally, I think its a solution for bone idle people who live out their parents pockets or are stupid enough to spend money on such things.
But if i was to choose between paying or using an alternative, id take the alternative.
I never did buy a phoenix license, thank fuck.

2.. Do you really think people who can add new commands and change packets can program?
Can the people who change the time on clocks actually make clocks?
    Some maybe, majority no.

1: Completely depends. If the creator of the emulator has more intentions to help the community by providing a stable and updated emulator it would be fine by me however I would strongly be against selling emulators if either the price is ridicilous ($50+) or when it is a piece of crap.

2: You can program when you know what you are doing and when you have the experience and knowledge to do so. That you can COPY and PASTE another command, editing some functions and adding a nice alert box does not say you can program, rather saying that you can copy and paste.

I was talking about selling emulators in general.

Selling emulators is just wrong. Like @Caustik said, it's illegal. No matter how you guys try to find a loophole in it, it's illegal. The fact of the matter is you're using their images and IPs. Therefore, it is illegal to do. Now, if you decided to change every single image in the game, then you could pull it off. If you did that, I would personally call you the biggest dumbass ever because at that point, you might as well make a new game. If you don't know how to make a new game, you should be worried about selling emulators because yours will probably end up being another complete disappointment towards the community.

I don't mean to be a dick, but it's true, it's the blunt truth.
(I'm not saying that you want to sell emulators, I'm saying in general for the sake of the community).
@tdid As far as wanting to help the community, the only way to help would be to release it for free. Even if you update it continuously, it's not helpful to the community because we have no way of benefiting other than you updating it, if something happens and you stop updating it, that screws us really or at least anyone using the emulator.
(Once again, I'm not talking about YOU, I mean in general, if someone is trying to sell an emulator, it's not a good idea.)

I know. I TRIED to explain it on a Dutch forum, but the answers were: 'He worked hard on that emulator so he deserves money', 'Shut up noob if he wants to ask money he should'. I guess they still don't understand it's wrong to sell those emulators. Hopefully he'll learn it very soon.

I've been in the retro community for several years and I have always been strongly against emulators being sold, not to mention.. Majority of the time they sell you a license they don't even release the source to you so it's not "leaked" and to "protect themselves".

It's f'ing rediculous in my eyes and seeing as so many people back in the day put in the hard yards to create the emulators which mind you never asked for a cent.
Then some newbie comes in that did a course in C# and adds a few features to the thing and tries to flog it as his own product, it's wrong.

Habbo Retros were created so people could enjoy all the features of "Habbo" without spending a fortune because Habbo is basically a complete rip off.
Other then that, Like others have mention.. It's illegal and completely frowned upon.

On a side note, If people code their own features and choose not to release it to the public I can understand that too.. Because in order to successfully run a retro you need to have unique features that no one else can offer.
Anyway, without going into much details there's more 2 cents on the topic.

Well appearantly people on Dutch forums think adding a few new features to Plus means they can sell it (AKA. Jordy from fagbo)

Yeah and Bas Milius who intended to sell it. Warned him before but well who am I to listen to. Then he got a nice letter delivered at his home adress from Sulake.

Biggest priority for Sulake is target hotels and developers that are making a profit.
