Re: [MUST READ FOR RETRO OWNERS] How to prevent DMCA notices, etc.

Wait wait wait.. this method can be beaten by Sulake. So in fact, this is not a must read, it's more a extra layer of hiding. Just because you use a VPN and fake information might hide you from Sulake for a little bit, but if your server company has any brains and realize you are using fake information, you can be done for fraud by them.. so you get screwed over by your host who will then most likely hand your real information to Sulake who on-top of your hosting company, will come down on you like a tonne of bricks.

Not good to follow this. Will just get you into more trouble. Just make a retro and take the chance, if you get pinned up then give up. Don't go getting arrested for a little game.

How can your server company ever find out who you are if you're using a proxy or VPN and use fake information in the first place? Use a email only exclusive to retros that also has fake information, and you're fine.

The worst that will happen is that the server company will close your VPS, but if you have daily back ups how can that really be that big of a problem?

Well simply, if the hosting company believes you are using fake information then they will request proof of identity. When set person can't display it the hosting company 9/10 will report you as being a fraud.

You might as well not do this if you're going to go to all this trouble. Waste of everybody's time.

Ugh... you're being a bit ignorant. Like I said the worst that will happen is they will close your VPS which they would do anyways. The only reason they would be asking for a real identity is only if they get DMCA complaints in the first place, and if it's an off shore VPS then most companies don't even check. If they request your identity you should be suspicious and switch companies anyhow in my opinion, you should have the right to be anonymous on the internet in the first place.

How would they even confirm a real indentity? LOL. Search you on Facebook and if your name doesn't come up then you're a fake?!

Use this for a fake identity: http://www.fakenamegenerator.com/gen-male-us-us.php --- Just edit it with an email that you've set up and you're good to goooooooo!

Do you think Anonymous easily has their identity caught? No it sometimes takes the FBI to investigate it. Do you really think someone with the skills of the FBI will track you down to shut your retro down? I don't think so.

This if you're aware of how to do it, minus the go agent tutorial will take at max 1-2 hours. It takes a person to set up a retro properly with proper texts in their CMS, catalogue, customs, images, etc upwards to 4 days - 2 weeks. It's a good investment considering it saves all the work you originally put into your hotel. If you're actually serious about providing a real online community and keeping it alive for a decent amount of time, this would definitely be something to consider.

The problem however is that those times from the V26 days when people actually invested time into their community because it was a hobby and their passion, are sadly mostly over. People do it for money, power and a quick project.

Most hotels only have a few edits and no imagination, same with the projects being released. Look at HoloCMS and HoloEMU, or Debbo, they had very unique features which made it fun.

So many people are whining about DMCA notices and saying that the end of retros are coming soon, and I'm just one with a solution to do something about it.

I'm not being ignorant at all, you posted a thread, I left a reply.

Simple, the hosting company has a right to ask you for proof of identification such as a passport, drivers license or birth certificate. Bam. There is their way or getting proof that you really exist or not.

Why create a fake name, email and all.. only to risk getting caught out and thrown away or fined huge amounts of money for being a fraud over a game? Ridiculous. If you're going to make a retro, then do so knowing that you can always be caught.

Sorry but why would a company take you to court for fraud because you used a fake name/address on their website? Once they've got your money they don't care. If it was an issue then they would require verification before they sold you anything.

If you get caught using fake information it can be considered as fraud.

The best way to stop DCMA complaints is either:
    a) stop hosting your retro
    b) look into something else

Sorry, but if you think this is gonna help. Might make it all harder but in the end they'll catch one way or another.

Now why would one move to a foreign country just to host a stupid retro?
