[Discussion] How big is this community/player base?

hey guys. I played maplestory when I was younger and loved it. I started programming about a year ago and stumbled upon ragezone. If I were to make a server, (lets say it appeals to what the community wants) how many people would on average are still active?

    pardon my ignorance.

    Best Regards,

    Connordev

Most likely not enough to make it profitable. Unless you are a great programmer and/or have a great team and are able to actually update and polish a server to be as good as the top 5, I'd be able to count your active players on one hand.

Yeah, pretty much what @retep998 said. Servers nowadays are so short-lived and there are a ton of them. Literally, tons. Servers like ExtaliaMS have remained open because they started a long time ago, have received huge donations, and now have the money to keep 1500+ players online at once. Other popular servers, have 200-500 players on at once. For your server to be noticed and played, especially when the populated servers already exist, you would need something very special.

Good luck if you try it though! We're not trying to be discouraging, just honest.

MapleLegends was in development from August to April 1st, now in top 5, very low rate too. First thing you need research is every server. Find where there's still a hole in the Private Server community. For me, I found a hole because there wasn't a good GMS-like nostalgic server around that is low rate, except for Royals (which IMO isn't that GMS-like), so after a lot of development and polishing, we now have 170 users on each day, and we only exist since a month.

You won't attract many users if its rates that already exist or very super custom server. I see a lot of servers trying to be very custom and no one likes it. Also, you need be dedicated and care about your users. If you don't, you won't show interest and hope for people to promote your server.

People IMO are also more interested in high rate than low rate, so there's that.

People liking high rate makes no sense to me.. Only thing that you can accomplish is op equips.. Which you can do in every version. Levels/Rebirths is just a matter of playing a lot.

It's in my opinion better to make the type of server you'd be interested in playing yourself, instead of trying to cater to a larger audience. You should strive to make a server either as a learning experience, or to make something that is to your own liking. If you have a specific goal for your server in mind, and have a good understanding of what you'd want it to be as a player, it's a lot easier to succeed. You shouldn't avoid making a certain kind of server because it isn't in style, or your competitors are doing a better job at it. I'd say, don't focus on what's going to attract more users, focus on what would attract you as a player, and then proceed to make a server built on your own ideals.

Absolutely this. You have much more understanding and dedication if you make a server that you like as well, not just one because most like it. If you make a server that you don't like at all and only did it because "most like it" you will quickly lose motivation and your server falls apart. However, you need make really big decisions before you apply anything. If not, and you screwed up, you either have permanent server damage or are forced to rollback.

If I made Legends how I wanted my server to be, I probably removed a few more things, but I know the server would have turned into a second NightsoulMS, haha.

As of the high rates. I refer above 4x as high rate already.

What is the point of playing a low rate private server when you can play GMS?

Lower versions; Nostalgia, can't be experienced in GMS.
Current/Higher versions; No pay-2-win, free character customization, tight-knit communities. Besides, even if a private server is the current version of gms, even "low-rates", as long as they aren't equal to gms, make a huge difference. In a 6x server, you'd spend 100 hours as opposed to 600 hours in GMS.

If all you did was grinding only yeah though it took 2 years and 8 months for the first level 200.
But some people were more into PQ, bosses, etc instead of grinding so they would not feel nostalgic until they reach a level to do what they used to do which takes very long on 1x and with the old exp.

Re: [Discussion] How big is this community/player base?

There are a lot of players that prefer the pre-BB gameplay of maplestory. The only way players can experience that is through private servers. I can only speak for the lowrate servers in the current market but most of them have working PQs and Bosses. For me it feels more rewarding to reach those "high levels" when it takes more effort to achieve them. That is why I stick around with v62 development and play. Rates dont really change my perception of a server because I'm a firm believer that maple is a community game. You forget about hard it is to get that high level if you surround yourself with players you enjoy spending time with.

In response to @Cygnus and @fluttershy2, the debate between pleasing players and sticking to the "original plan" is a very interesting discussion. It is hard to strike that balance that appeases everyone. I agree somewhat with both of your stances. Finding a niche in a market is an ideal situation but there are always going to be those players that see eye to eye with you and your preferred maplestory gameplay. There are so many of those "server hoppers" who will settle down with a server if they find what they are looking for (which is eventually bound to happen). So to answer the original question @anondev (though it seems your banned so....) if you provide a stable game environment those players who share the same vision of the game as you will fill it.
