(Start Up) Two developers trying to make headway.

Me and a buddy of mine are in our Senior year as Comp Sci Majors. And he propose that we should make a private server. If i didn't already know how much work this would require and time and effort and patience, i'd say let's do it in a heartbeat. But since i do know that, i was a bit hesitant at first but hopped aboard after much convincing.

Anyway back on Point. Since we are going to try this, just wondering if someone could point us in the right direction here. We are not new to programming, however we are new to game development and setting things up. So this is where we'll probably need the most help. I've browsed around looking for some of the latest sources(found a v160, not sure how stable it is though). Most of the sources, if not all are in Java. I don't like java for personal reasons, so we decided to try this project in C#. Are there any C# sources at all that anyone knows of(I couuldn't find any)? If not, What's the most stable and up to date Java source that we can use as a reference.

I took a look at the java source that i have and Jesus Christ it was alot of code. I noticed alot of redundancy(D.R.Y.) but nonetheless, still alot. With that being said, What is the backbone of any source? Like what are the things that need to be taken care of first when developing this.

Lastly, any tips or little things we should know would be greatly appreciated. and is it viable to try to do this in C#? or should we just stick to java. There not that different syntactically wise where it'll be a problem, We just prefer C#. But if Java will save us more heart ache, java it is. Thanks for the insight.

    @ClickCl4ck1609

You and your friend are in your senior year of compiter science as majors and want to make an illegal server?

To be honest, I'd say you should work on something legit that way it can be used as source material for your future endeavors. By that, I mean it's like having an art porfollio for an arts major.

If you really want to do this, I'd suggest c# or c++ (if you can do it). C# base source or reference... I don't really know any that come to mind right away, but for c++: vana.

Btw, should go in Private MapleStory Chat and then here would be your actual development.

Yeah ik Crazy right, but this is just for pure shits and giggles so to speak. This will not be in my portfolio of things i've done to "show off". He's actually the one leading on this project. He just doesn't want to develop by himself so i agreed to help.

C++ isn't really my forte so i'll steer away from that lol. I can read it, just not the best at programming in it. Python is my preferred language because I've come to realize how awesome python is but he's not really good at python and i'm comfortable with my C# skills. C# is his bread and butter so we're going with that. I"m only putting in as much effort as he does. The minute his interest dies, so will mine.

and same version (beta) in java to leech stuff

I think there was another c# source though the links were dead anyway.

check miscellaneous and guides/tutorials too at:
    Server Development MapleStory Library

There are a lot of open source client server games on github and elsewhere that you could include on your portfolio.

I'd say make the emulator from scratch in C#, using these other sources as references. Especially since you already have a partner, this way is more fun, you'll learn more, and the end result is something you can call your own. Of course, it's the more difficult path to take.

MapleGame/LokiMS could be a decent reference for you if you go down the 'create your own source' route. It is also in C# which seems beneficial for you!

Loki was the base of this project and is unedited in rev 1 or 2 afaik. It was probably also posted to github.

Thanks. We're going to weigh our options with all the links, tips and suggestions that were provided. One thing that i can already see is going to make this more difficult is the lack of documentation and no comments in people sources. It makes it extremely difficult to read people's code to figure out what the hell is going on.

Much expected in the MapleStory private server community. You won't find a single source with full documentation, sadly. You just have to mess with it enough to realize how everything works.
