Well you bought DayZ which means you have the standalone version. That's good. That means there are no pre-requisites to playing. Buy it, download it, boot it up. I recommend you configure all settings before even clicking play and going into a server.

EDIT: Unless you bought ArmA2 & CO2?

whenever i try to configure the settings my game crashes and gives me a error that says device restart failed or something. i tried to play it but you have no idea how choppy it is. i dont think its my computer because i have played alot of games on this computer and i have never had this issue. i didnt get the arma 2 and co2 games because i didnt realize that there was a difference and i purchased this bad version instead. is there any way that i could get arma and co2 without having to spend more money?

What you've done is purchase the Standalone version. This is being developed by the creators of the initial DayZ mod which was for ArmA2 and CO2. Sadly, steam don't provide refunds and as much as I regret to say it, there was a warning that the game is still in alpha version. If you can take some evidence and submit it is a bug here then I'm sure it'll be swiftly fixed as it is fairly game-breaking in your case. Can you provide any screenshots? I may be able to assist.

Did a little search. Turns out that Windows XP isn't supported by DayZ, or infact the ArmA2 engine. Wow, great job on their part. I'm terribly sorry. If you haven't already, I'd strongly recommend submitting an aforementioned bug report, as yes, this is incredibly game-breaking and does affect a huge percentage. Don't worry, this was apparently inherent in the mod too, so it's not all bad.

Standalone has been pretty great so far, once they add bans to the servers and get rid of more hacks, things will be awesome.
