Sounds like a personal problem ;)
Never had a problem with playing ps games on ps2.. Have you tried switching the ps2's position *either vertical or laying down*.. or maybe clean up that disc :P
I had the same problem too...but I was using the ps2's setup menu to make the disc spin faster and smoothe out the graphics...once I disabled those, my ff7 played no problem :D

On the Browser/System Configuartion Screen press Triangle (Version), goto PlayStation Driver, click triangle (Options), and make sure both settings are on Standard.

i had this prob ages ago but each time i put in acd is will say *please instert a cd* i put in all our games but not 1 worked.ps we have sold all our games exept gta3
Did the PS2 give you a disk read error? If so it's your disk. Test your disk in somebody elses PS2, if it doesn't work there it's the disk. Otherwise...>.<;

Crap, you got one of the old ps2s?? I know the first few models had many problems in playing dvds and ps games *let alone ps2 games* :(
yeah, i had that problem too once, so i got my dad to pop that sucka open and clean up the laser part with a Q-Tip and a bit of alcohol. Google "Disk Read Error DRE's PS2 fix" or something like that if u want more details
