I'd say that there are a lot of retail like servers, so I'd recommend to try some private servers, check out the game play and everything that the server offers, then if you feel like you will play this game you might put money into it and play the official server.
If you like to raid, WoW is by far the best game out there. To me that's its main selling point. New games which try to beat WoW at raiding always fail because the mass market knows fine well it's an imitation of WoW.
As for the rest of the game, well it's very polished. It's had time to improve and so the main game play works really well. If you used to play priv servers, WoW is like a breathe of fresh air.
