Re: Is The PS3 Worth Its Cost?

I know plenty of people with a HDTV. It really depends on the country and/or area.

The 360 has more games yes, but the PS3 will have enough games in the next 6 months to please pretty much every gamer. The PS3 right now has a nice collection already, most of them aren't exclusives like Assassin's Creed or CoD4, but they're still amazing games, so if you don't have anything else yet, then the PS3 will have enough to offer.

What Im asking you is; do you think the PS3 is worth its weight in gold?

    Advantages

    - Cheapest Blu-Ray player available
    - Great selection of games
    - Fantastic graphics
    - User friendly

    Disadvantages

    - Very expensive
    - It's a big chunky console
    - Most of its games are available on other platforms (e.g Wii, XBOX 360 etc)
    - Not much stock available

    So what do you think?

    Shizzle,

I got one for christmas. It's bleeding heavy, but beats the 360 by miles.

And yeah, the ps3 is worth the money, its a number crunching supercomputer with its cell processor. Oh and u can game on it!
OpenGL. I don't know if it's on the disk or not. It was spoused to be on it but haven't tried.

Yeah it is. The Cell processor is a FP machine.

8 PS3s can simulate 200 nodes of a super computer.

Yeah... $400 gets you a great dedicated DL box. Just upgrade the HDD and you are in business. :icon6:

    Not probably, it will...

HDDVD player is $130 and the WiFi adapter is $100. So add $230 to the total of what ever system you are getting.

Then you'll need to factor in the difference of HDD size.

Though the x360 does come with HD cables unlike the PS3.

but except that all its a magnific console
    1) The PS3 does look better then the older consoles in SD.

    2) What are you talking about? What broken things?

    3) No the are not. The PS3 upscales PS2 games to HD res. That means they look better on the PS3.

It isn't meant to be portable.
    It's a home console.

Personally, I prefer the PS3 simply because of it's online capabilities.

I think people are getting too involved in the whole console war era. That era is gone. People buy what they like. Don't be an ass and buy something because other people are. Stop being sheep and think independently for once.
Actually that era is now. Especially when both the PS3 and x360 offers most of the same games.

Before the console with the games you like is what caused you to pick it. Now the games you like are on both consoles.

Depends on what he means by capabilities. Online gaming the x360 is better but over all the PS3 is better. Why? PSP to PS3 support. Now that what makes it win. Being able to use the PS3 as a remote media server for your PSP is a great thing. As long as you have a WiFi connection on your PSP you can remote access videos, music, pictures, and some games.

We might see an increase of those sales in 2008 if games like MGS4 or FF13 will be released but they still need more exclusives. BluRay might be an advantage but how many people do you know that have a HD TV?! I almost know noone. So there goes that. I regret my impatientness....that I've purchased it on the release date. My assumption is that the buying interest will increase in Spring 2008...

    2007 = not worth
    2008 = worth
(Sorry for writing a lil tale >.<)
MGS4, FFXIII, and also GT5 will sell the PS3 in 2008. Each one will easily push 1-2 million console sales.

And for HDTV, it's all depends on where you are at. In Japan and South Korea it's the norm. Over here in the sates, if you buy a new TV it's an HDTV because they make more since. (Smaller, better picture, and a not that much more) But over in Europe it's another story.

Basically ATSC and ISDB territories have the HD craze while the DVB territories don't. Why? It's simply because of the cost. DVB (HD version) costs more to implement and that's why it isn't taking off.

That's true there. If you don't already have the x360, then the PS3 is very nice looking. Simply because most of the new games are on both systems and there isn't much of exclusives on either to really drive the choice. (Sure x360 has Halo and Gears of War but the PS3 has equal number of good exclusives that are out now and to come).

The x360 doesn't have much for exclusives for the next 6 months while the PS3 does. So next summer I can really see both systems offering the same number of good games.

It's not expensive. The amount of research that went into the console makes it worth the money you have to pay. The advantages outweigh the disadvantages you've posted.

I got the PS3 for Christmas aswell and now I've got one and played it for hours, I think the PS3 outdoes the 360. And now I have to say, it's more than value for your money ;) Despite the fact it takes up a fair bit of space but Im not complaining ^_^

Yes the 360 has a better videochip, but the differences in graphics are really small, and is mostly a matter of preference. Actually that's not true, it's mostly about how well the developers programmed it, i seen comparison tests where each console had it's wins and losses.

Like i have said, the choice is between the games, online gaming, controller and the media options.
Yes you can tell the diff. . . xbox 360 has WAY cleaner graphics...
    1) If you want a Blue Ray DvD Player the Ps3 is worth it for you.
    2) If you wana play the best online games 24/7 you will have more fun on xbox.

Most Blue Ray Players are around 300 - 450 for relatively cheap ones... a blue ray drive for a pc is around 200$.

If you are never gona really buy a Blue Ray Disc its not worth it. . . but if you have a 60" 1080P Tv and don't have a HD DvD player get the ps3 i guess....
The Ps3 will have further Price Cuts its a tad bit over Priced just like its predecessors im guessing the price will stabilize around 300 to 350$ almost half its launch price... but for some DvD enthusiasts it may be a fair Value.

Nonsense. I seen comparisons, and from i've seen it's the developer who causes that. Basicly 1 game looks better on the 360, and another on the PS3.

No it doesn't. The difference between the two is that the colors on the PS3 are more pale and the colors on the x360 are over dark.

Each has their problems. One you can see stuff but doesn't look as good but the other you can see stuff nicely but the over darkeness makes it hard to play in on-screen darkeness.

Other then that the graphics quality are the same.

Color representation has nothing to do with the graphics out put. If you want a more cleaner graphics then go with the PS3. Why? It doesn't scale HD games. 1080p game is 1080p unlike the x360 which upscales a 720p single, which in fact makes it less "cleaner."

    I know this from experience.

Each to their own. CoD4 plays just as good on both systems and in my experienced, I've spent more time playing online on the PS3 then the x360.

Yes it is worth it, even if you don't use the BluRay player. The PS3 does have a ton of quality games on it.

And how was the PS3 predecessors over priced? Both the PSX and the PS2 were released at $300. Now how is that over priced? Especially for what they offered.

The PSX has superior abilities over the things out at the time (SEGA Genesis and SNES). Now with the PS2, it was the cheapest DVD player around. $300 got you an amazing DVD player where as a normal standalone unit would have cost you $700.

Under priced if you asked me.

Exactly... Look at CoD3. It looks better on the x360. But when you look at Oblivion, there is no comparison about it not being better on the PS3.

Now when you look at games like CoD4, Assassins Creed, and most new games out there, it's a different story. They look exactly the same. The only difference are the basic color representations from the different GPU manufactures.

And the funny bit. A lot of the newer games have better frame rates on the PS3 then the x360. Why is that? The x360's CPU bottlenecks it's GPU. Unlike the PS3, who's GPU can run at 100% if need be.

So as it stands. There isn't really any better looking system. Both the x360 and the PS3 looks the same and of course they look better then the Wii.

And before you come back saying x360 will always look better, take a look at GT5: Prologue and compare it to x360's offering Forza Motorsport 2. There is no doubt that GT5 looks better.

Depended where you lived really, it's insane but the PS2 released for roughly now 500 euro in europe.
Exactly... Look at CoD3. It looks better on the x360. But when you look at Oblivion, there is no comparison about it not being better on the PS3.
Bad comparison really. They made a new texture pack later on, it still needs to be released on the 360, and possibly the PC (not sure if has been released on there yet)
Anyway there was a test like 8 months ago on GameSpot which clearly showed that some games simply looked much better on the PS3 then on the 360. Most on the 360 though, but that was because the PS3 was still new. Right now it's pretty much the same, maybe some slight differences.

In the end the whole graphics stuff is pointless. So is any of the hardware except for the Blu-Ray drive, which really influence the options for the console. Everything else is to similar to compare, and with similar i mean in performance of the game, because in the end the game will be adjusted to take advantage of their qualities.

Like i've said many times now, it really depends on what you want from online, media, controller etc etc.

Side By Side The Xbox 360 Texture Resolution looks way better "Noticably so" on the xbox 360 than on the ps3. . .
    The Ps3 will
    A) Probobly Blind you to hide the detail it is not capable of displaying.
    B) If you can see Detail it will be Washed out and look like someone tossed the textures in a washing machine and put way to much bleach.
    The Xbox 360
    A) Presents a Clear picture with GOOD CONTRAST, The ps3 to me has NO Idea what contrast even is! it just tries to make everything Super Bright!
    B) If your Xbox 360 is Dark and doesn't let you see anything thats probobly Your Tv. . . Everything LOOKS GREAT on my tv.... and i dont even have that nice of a Tv its just a 32" Vizio with 1200:1 contrast at 720P "768P" w/e

For you to say the xbox 360 is Dark and doesn't let you see anything to me says your eyes/Tv are not normal . . . my friend just got a 1080I or P cant remember and it looks EVEN ! BETTER! on that!...

Also In all honesty . . . In Oblivion there are some parts that look better on the Xbox and there are some parts that look Better on the Ps3. . . but noth for nothing i Say the Towns In Oblivion Looked way better on the Xbox than they did on the ps3. . .

Ehm... the PS3 version definetly looks better, i don't know why you think the 360 version looks better. Especially with faces, his shield and distant textures you could see a big difference.
I also bet you didn't check Tigerwoods comparison. I guess that would hurt to much to admit...

Well, after finally seeing both a 360 and a PS3 in person, there isn't much difference at all graphic wise. I'd still prefer the PS3 though since I grew up on video games with a sega genesis to a PS1.

A nice, sleek black color is better than a boring white color anyway. :)

Lol.... First of all... The x360 does a horrible job at contrast. Sure it's much higher then the PS3's. In fact it's too much higher. That is why it's overly dark. But that's a common thing with ATI cards and nVidia cards. The contrast levels are completely different. But the color has nothing to do with graphics.

And no it's now my TV. Fact of the matter its the same way on all the TVs I've tried.

    19" Phillips CRT
    20" Samsung CRT
    26" Sharp HDTV w/ 1200:1 Contrast
    26" Samsung HDTV w/ 3000:1 Contrast
    40" Sony 1080p HDTV w/ 13000:1 Contrast

Now if you are saying it's my TV then it's funny... First of all, CRT TVs wont have a problem like with. Second of all it's been on 5 different sets. And finally the last TV that I have is better then all but a few TVs out there.

So don't tell me it's my TV. I do know a lot more about this stuff then you (obvious as you are a fanboy) and I wouldn't make a stupid mistake by saying its one thing when its not.

Oh really? Sure it does look better in 1080p. That is what I am running it. But the fact of the matter is that the x360's GPU over contrasts the image.

Oh I wonder why. Maybe it's because they are first generation x360 ports that wasn't done right? I think so. So how about taking a look at comparisons of "NEW" games. You might just be surprised on what you see. Like:
    Gametrailers.com - Assassin's Creed - PS3 vs Xbox 360 Comparison HD
    Gametrailers.com - Assassin's Creed - PS3 vs Xbox 360 Comparison HD
Gametrailers.com - The Orange Box - PS3 vs Xbox 360 Comparison HD <-- Surprisingly the PS3 version has better contrast and much better lighting effects.
Gametrailers.com - The Darkness - PS3 vs. Xbox 360 Comparison HD <-- Oh noes! Yet again. The PS3 version has better contrast, better lighting effects and not to mention the x360 version looks very washed out!

There is a difference between how it should be and how it's over done. And for the x360, it over does it quite often.

Re: Is The PS3 Worth Its Cost?

Hate to interrupt but isn't this a discussion on whether the PS3 is worth the price? Not whether the 360 is better or not.

I think we established the PS3 is worth it.

All these topics will end soon though, it will be kept in 1 topic then.

Atm the PS3 (In Australia) is still $999AUD we were going to get one but we decided to get a Nintendo Wii instead and wait for the PS3 to go down, I own a x-box 360 and i've watched more DVDs on it then I have been playing games I don't really like them I enjoy playing my PS2 rather then x-box 360.

I would rather buy the PS3 than an x-box 360, I like the control best on the Nintendo 64, just fits perfectly in your hand but on the other hand I dislike the x-box controller, but thats me.

The N64 was definetly 1 of the best controllers ever made, it was truely brilliant. Still i love the 360 controller, it feels great.

The Playstation controllers are fine, but imo they need to be changed. Back in the day the Dualshock controller was added later, and was only really need for a few games. Now it's constantly used, and thus i prefer the 360 layout then the PS3 layout, using analog sticks is just normal these days.

How can it be overpriced if the hardware in it costs you atleast twice as much?

I think it should be lowered to, i just want to play games. It's a waste leaving 9999gigabytes unused.

    ~I know its not 9999gigs.....

I thought the PS3 was a bit overpriced, but once I got it... I feel in love with it. The graphics are great, so are the games. The game Resistance: Fall Of Man is such a tight game. The game Lair is too with the pure 6 axis's through the game(for as much as i've played so far) my suggestion to that though. DO NOT PLAY LAIR DRUNK you don't want a GUI(Gaming Under the Influence...) lol. Well thats all I got to say for now.
