If your looking to pay for one try star wars galaxies. Now that I played the full new CU its not that bad...
I'd find it hard to grasp how a Modern MMORPG would work.
Say there's your usual Nations: America, Middle East, China, or whatever
Level 1: Start with knife, kill hordes of Deers, Dogs, Buffalos respectively... get money from drops... o.O
Level 25: Wearing full Kevlar suit +10 Agility -20 Constituition due to cup guard.
Get harassed by WWF...

Honestly - I'd imagine anyone trying out a modern mmorpg would have one hell of a difficult time trying to get things done right. Somehow it just wouldnt work.

Well a mmorpg thats in the future there is rf online that will soon be in open beta you can select between 3 races and one of them is the mecha race well there is still swords its actualy kinda mixed ><

Theres probably more out there but try these first.
well...if not lookinf for a 3D....u might try the well known dark eden.... they have machineguns, assault rifles and granades and stuff like that.... its 2D but i guarantee its gonna be fun :) (they have also magic and vampires, the whole story is based on a human vs vampires war)

outpost was the closest thing you would get. It had ak's and m4's and it was a 3rd person mmofps. Scratch that, it was like gunz but outdoors and npcs. Never mind, gunz has that to. Good luck, you find a modern mmorpg, inform us :)

Yah DarkEden is kinda cool, but the graphic is like 7 years old.
Just recently i've find out about www.silkroadonline.net
It's looks kinda like Leniage 2, client only weight about 501 mb but after decompresion it's like 2.1 GIG. Tight graphic. So i would recomend it to eny one who's looking for a cool mmorpg game.
