    Quests? or Grind?

yeah we all want to reach level cap...
but mmos have different ways of providing exp. Some, like in DNSEA, you get more exp by getting guild quests in the board, in 9D grinding is much better.. same in ROse online. Well, in Rose Online, questing does not only give you exp but also some items you can use. but still, it's easier to level up through grinding.

so as the title suggests, which do you prefer? Questing or Grinding?

Some MMORPG now a days have Quests that is just basically the same as grinding. But somehow I like grinding, Mainly because you could just easily lure a lot of mobs then AOE them.

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

Paid for games tend to have quests a plenty, F2P lack em generally and instead op the mob grind... which is a marketing sceme of having people 'play longer'. And even then, they're Pseudo quests... like Kill 50-100+ of w/e mob just to make you actually grind your xp.

Suffice to say, I fucking hate mob grinding MMOs... they're all a load of tripe.

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

I tired RIFT Trial and grinding isn't gonna get you anywhere. I got about twice as much EX for killing same mobs (15) doing the quest rather than just killing same mobs.

    So yes, quests are better

Quests, all the way. Those psuedo quests that Daedius mentioned suck balls, but most quests in most games are better and make the game more enjoyable than simply pressing the mouse and keys over and over.

I'd go for grinding, although it gets tiring and uninteresting after a while.

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

QUEST>>>>>>> 1.) you have a story. 2.) you have goals to achieve. 3.) you get to kill monsters 4.) there are other activities you may do (part of the quest).
GRINDING>>>>> 1.) kill 2.) kill monsters 3.) kill more 4.) kill more monsters until you die out of boredom.

After careful analysis..... hmmmmm.... i vote for QUESTING????

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

Most questing is grinding with breaks to go back to town. Mainly because those types of quests are piss easy to implement. I prefer quests which take you out of your normal leveling playstyle. Ie defending an NPC from waves of mobs is better than killing 20 of that mob. Basically decently scripted thing that have taken more than 30seconds for the devs to add to a database.

I'd say eve has probably the best quest system in the mmo genre. Lots of different missions, all fairly different from each other, with different setups normally required from mission to mission. Plus they take a while to complete (I've spent like 2 hours in one before) with an awesome reward even being in safe space.

I prefer plain grinding over shitty boring quests but like Robert said if there's some though put into it and a little time from the devs it can really improve the fun in a game.

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

Quests are like.... go to this npc on the other side of the town... then NPC on the other side of town asks you to collect this item from this monster... then you have to kill no one knows how many monsters you have to kill in order to get that item... then you go back to npc on the other side of town and he/she tells you to bring the finished product to NPC of the next village and NPC of the next village asks you to do the same thing... now, is that what you call a story?!?

would be easier to kill all the mobs you see LOL! it shows you how strong you are!

but still... it depends, if quests give more exp, id go for questing... if grinding is easier, id go for grinding... but seriously, i hate running/travelling from one town to another just to get a quest done

EDIT: i read your post again, haha, ROse Online? i played that years ago... and grinding is much better., although the items u receive from quests can be sorta useful, u can always purchase equips from other players... well, mosts mmos are like that anyway

I prefer grind, Don't get me wrong I do enjoy a side quest every now and then but I am more of a straight forward gamer.

the only quests i do are those that are needed to access a new map, change jobs, and quest events.

I dare you to level up by grinding in Seven Souls Online . Oh wait, Sorry I forgot they will close the servers before the year end. The game failed because of excessive grinding but few quests...

questing for sure but grinding for quest now is becoming a trend *point to GW2*
but sometime grinding mob let you learn new style of playing your character so i normally will spend few hours grinding to learn new combo/playstyle

Naah, it depends on the game. There are a lot of games i played where grinding gives you more exp plus better weapons than questing... Well, if you think 'running around the map going from one NPC to another NPC and get useless weapons as rewards' fun, then i can't argue w/ that.

back when i was still playing flyff in 2007, questing helps a lot. not just a little bit.
if you've got cash, you can reach higher levels fairly easy just by buying quest items and turning them in.

The different tends to be a quest reward is guaranteed. Mob drops are notoriously unreliable, let alone finding stuff you actually want. I bet everyone has had streaks of bad luck before, quests make a good backup. Imo questing should give more exp, but have limited numbers of them to kill large amounts, thus they are supporting the grind and making it more efficient. Then have the quest give rare item rewards to make sure people have good enough gear to progress, while having epics drop off mobs rarely so players can sometimes get lucky.

For small games anyway where the devs can't afford to spend too much time on adding quest content. Give me another dungeon to run over 100 quests imo!

i agree with you brother. quests rewards are often decent equipment which are better than their NPC counterparts. in some games, quests gives good amount of money which will supply you with all the money you might need while working your character's level.

Glad to see pre v7 (v5?) player like myself :)
I know 20% is a lot and there are some others giving more but it still doesn't let you level purely by questing and besides I never had enough penya to buy unimportant items :(

    Re: Quests? or Grind?

Mob drops in Rose Online make you rich from what I can remember... also the quest rewards are gears that totally help you in leveling up cuz the gears are always fit for your level... but grinding still gives better exp than questing...

for DN, questing gives better exp but quest rewards are useless... so are mob drops...

Grinding would be a lot cooler if your skills level up whenever you use them. just like in 9d--when you use the skill more often, it will become stronger. XD
